i'm a canto speaker but whenever i listen to canto songs being sung (not matter how nice the tune) i always feel that theres something missing...

however, if i hear a mandarin version of that song (sung by the SAME artist) it always sound fuller and more rewarding... does anyone else get this feeling or is it just me??

for example, i wonder if david tao's "susan said" or wang leehom's "kiss goodbye" would have sounded so nice in cantonese! :)

btw, i dun even understand mandarin (or spell it properly)!

I think it depends on the song. I don't understand mandarin either but I like listening to some mandarin songs.

3/4 of the music i listen to is maderin, i think they have more beat into the songs than contonese. well contonese are cool and i do listn to them every now and then.

I'm canto, but I think Mando songs sound nicer, because you can flow better with Mando, Cantonese is rather rough, the way we talk, the way we sing, its more rough compared to Mando... but you can swear with style using canto...-lol

Oh...wow... I think it depends on the song. Anyway, I dont think that cantonese song are not as good as madarin song. Too bad most of you think so... :(

its not that i think canto songs are bad (it depends on the song) but i've heard the same songs (leo's "dog/cat" song for example -- sorry i forget the name at the moment) sung in both and preferred the madarin song. strange thing was, i bought his album for the canto version but later heard the mandarin version; the latter version just sounded a little smoother... i dun know if that makes sense..

my friend (in tien sui wai, NT,HK -- i'm in UK) tried to give an explanation that the wider range of spoken canto tones means that things get more complicated than the madarin equivilent.. haha, except if its beijing mandarin which just sounds so sharp and not smooth

It really depends on the melody. Some Cantonese songs when sung in Mandarin can sound really bad. But it also depends who the singer is. I find Mandarin music to be more flowing while Cantonese music has more tone different in a song. But overall Mandarin sounds better.

i really like mandarin songs better, like even Janice Wei, she normally sings cantonese (which i normally don't listen to but i LOVE her voice!) *and* she has great english, but the song she sings in Mandarin is soooooo gooooood!!!!
