Whenever I go to a chinese bakery and get cake or bread there, I notice the texture diffrence between east and west immediately after the first bite. Western cakes and bread are on the heavy side. But chinese is heaven, its so light and you can eat for a long time before you start to remember the calories you've just swallowed. I just adore chinese chiffon cake in any form. Delicious.
It depends what you want, I go to Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Western bakeries. I usually get something not too rich which many western bakeries tend to be for some bake goods.
For birthday cakes I've been buying them from chinese bakery for year now - I love the one with fresh fruits piece inside the sponge cake. In general I would pick a chinese/japanese/korean bakery over western bakery but I unfortunately dont have one locally and need to travel 1.5hour for my nearest one.
I prefer western style, i don't like too much cream and fruit, its ok for a pudding now and then but not often at all.
I Prefer western cakes. I do like a Chinese bakery cake once awhile which reminds me of my childhood.
