Apple releases Safari 3.1

Not to be left behind by recent releases of Firefox and Internet Explorer, Apple has released version 3.1 of its ever-improving Safari. Billing itself “the world’s fastest web browser,” Apple claims that the new version is about 2x faster than Firefox and IE. It’s the first browser to support new video and audio tags in HTML 5 and the first to support CSS animations.

For what it’s worth, Safari 3 has indeed marked a sea change for the browser. I have little inclination to use it on my PC, but it’s a formidable browser for those of you on Macs (I use it on my MacBook Pro).

Safari 3.1 is available now for OS X and Windows.

ye safari is a pretty gd browser though there's no point in getting it if ur using a pc but with the mac as it is already installed, it functions very well if not better on the mac and so therefore there is no point in getting other browsers for the mac. also, if this source is correct and it is now 2 times faster than firefox, then that is just a bonus.

New Chip to Let mp3 players Hold 500,000 Songs or 3,500 movies

You're not going blind and that's not a typo.

In the current issue of Science, researchers at IBM unveiled a new type of media storage technology they say could give MP3 players the ability to store around 500,000 songs or 3,500 movies.

It's called "racetrack" memory and it involves using the "spin" of an electron to store data. More explicitly, the researchers were able to "store data in columns of magnetic material arranged on the surface of a silicon wafer. The information moves around the columns at high speed, giving the technology its racetrack name."

lol nice, that is applied nanotechnology, I believe the ultimate goal was to store 1byte of data per electron, ( i may be wrong because i have forgotten since the nano tech class i took last semester lol) rawr i need to look back at my notes later hahahah

Windows XP Service Pack 3

Features:

The release candidate of Windows XP Service Pack 3 is now available at Microsoft's download site.

The move marks the first opportunity for all users of the six-year-old operating system to try out its final upgrade. Previously, several thousand users were given access to test builds of SP3 only by Microsoft's invitation.

According to a company spokeswoman, Windows XP SP3 RC (release candidate) will be available only from the Microsoft Download Center. Unlike Vista SP1, which debuted last week, XP SP3 will not be soon added to Windows Update. In fact, the spokeswoman seemed to say SP3 wouldn't be offered to users via Microsoft's update service before the service pack is finished next year.

"XP SP3 2ill be added to WU [Windows Update] in 1H '08," she said in an e-mail late Tuesday.

The download weighed in at about 336MB, but when SP3 is offered through Windows Update, the installation file will be much smaller -- around 70MB.

Even though the release candidate can be installed by anyone running XP SP2, Microsoft warned off casual users from trying the preview. "As this is a release candidate, we strongly encourage only those who are comfortable installing pre-release code to download Windows XP SP3," said the spokeswoman.

The spokeswoman also confirmed that the final version of Windows XP SP3 remains slated for delivery in the first half of 2008.
Significance of SP3

Recently, Microsoft downplayed the significance of Windows XP SP3. In a white paper posted to its Web site, the company praised Windows Vista at XP's expense, reminding users that Vista boasted beefed-up security, for instance. The spokeswoman also chimed in. "Windows XP SP3 does not bring significant portions of Windows Vista functionality to Windows XP," she said.

That may be so, but according to a Florida performance testing software developer, XP SP3 is not only 10% faster than XP SP2, but more than twice as fast as Vista SP1, claims that Microsoft disparaged within days.

XP SP3, in fact, is the newest version of Vista's biggest rival, according to Forrester Research. U.S. and European businesses will delay Vista deployment, Forrester analyst Benjamin Gray said a month ago, in part because of application incompatibility problems unheard of in XP. "That's causing a lot of XP shops to take a wait-and-see approach to Vista," said Gray then.

Windows XP debuted in October 2001 and was last updated as SP2 in August 2004; SP3 will be the final major upgrade of the operating system.

Summary

Just when it looked like OLPC was finally getting at least one foot firmly grounded in reality with the upcoming Windows XP version of its low-priced XO, Nick Neg takes things back into the stratosphere with the unveiling of the XO 2.0. Due in 2010, the new laptop will employ dual sunlight-readable touchscreen displays in a smaller, folding e-book form factor. Sure, it looks totally amazing, but we'll believe it when we see it. As if that weren't ambitious enough, Nick calls a $20 pricepoint per display not out of the question, thanks to the ubiquity of LCD screens for DVD players, with a final laptop price of $75. Sure Nick, but 2010? Let's work on getting the XO down to $100 first, shall we? Oh, and speaking of the XO, the Give 1 Get 1 program will be started back up in August or September of this year. There's just never a dull moment with these folks.

About XP SP3, I'm reading here that SP3 isn't good for AMD machines:

XP Service Pack 3 Kills AMD Machines

Windows XP Service Pack 3 finally arrived to our computers this week… And is now killing AMD machines, according to Jesper Johansson, former program manager for security policy at Microsoft.

The problem relates to machines with SP3 installed rebooting and then not allowing users to get so much as Safe Mode. The problem is mainly affecting AMD users who bought their machines from HP. Johansson attributes the problem to the way that HP puts images of Windows onto its machines, using the same copy for both Intel and AMD boxes.

"Because the image for both Intel and AMD is the same all have the intelppm.sys driver installed and running. That driver provides power management on Intel-based computers. On an AMD-based computer, amdk8.sys provides the same functionality," says Johansson.

Some other OEM’s beside HP have the same practice, and presumably their users will be seeing the same issue.

There is another problem with SP3 that has not yet been tracked down to anything so specific that is causing random hangs and system crashes, though at least one can get into Windows itself (unlike the lucky AMD users.)

Windows service packs causing mayhem and havoc is not a new phenomenon – indeed, AMD machines got hit with a similar bug back in 2000 when any machine running over 350 MHz crashed and burned after a new service pack was released – and we may wait a few weeks for all of the kinks to get sorted out.

Dell Mini Inspiron

Thinking of a new Eee PC or maybe Wind laptop? Hold up, Dell's about to loose this baby on the sub-$500 mini-laptop world. All we've got are these pictures for now but the specs can't be far behind. Even the name "mini-Inspiron" comes from the file name of the Dell-supplied pics. However, if what we've already heard holds up, then we're looking at 8.9-inches dolled up in a sub-$500 price tag with a choice of both Windows XP Home or Ubuntu Linux, 8-in-1 card reader, integrated webcam, direct media playback buttons, and a "host of wireless access options." Expect more next week as the Computex show kicks off.
