I do agree that human did not ARTIFICALLY create global warming out of thin air, but as you yourself had said, humans brought upon themselves global warming at this point in time (instead of in the distant future where we may have more technology to off-set climatic changes and all) Choices we make, I wish to be optimistic that each tiny little effort counts in the grand scheme of things. If everyone thinks that only the biggies should act, while still endorsing products which is the most damaging to our environment, we may as well just close the case and pre-decorate our collective coffin called the Earth. I had made the point in terms of developing countries going to be the next big importer of energy sources, but if developed countries make a point of creating a "trend" being sustainable, we may just stand a chance in turning the tide. Oh, the impending doom of religious (dogmatic) war may just be the end of us all.
I doubt the administration will do anything about it since they benefit from taxing factories and all. The only solution is that the general population as individuals take it into serious consideration and make radical changes to our daily living that might help reduce slightly this pressing problem. (this is completely utopic as humans care too much about their own convenience, me included). @ Hiake I am sure the LONG time you are going to spend building the ark , you can find yourself a girlfriend/wife and sire some evil offsprings Im sure my potential gf will not have this ambition, and besides im an -innocent2 so i cant sire eviil offspring. We should always start small... not overly ambitious at first Do small, ok, ill come and build it in your backyard then and you can help You can make do with styrofoam? Ill be massively polluting and besides, it wont be strong enough to hold all the animals inside. Dummy for building an ark is your new best friend Do me a favor, find that book for me -cool Don't be pessimistic, one can always hope -devil Hmm... so i hope that you will build it for me then.
@WInd> Im sure my potential gf will not have this ambition, and besides im an -innocent2 so i cant sire eviil offspring. Well, I am only saying the offsprings are evil (which they are, that's the default by my book) -tongue2 Do small, ok, ill come and build it in your backyard then and you can help Sure, but you may have do some weeding first, I can't even open the door to the backyard... Ill be massively polluting and besides, it wont be strong enough to hold all the animals inside. Not true, you will be reserving a huge amount of styrofoam (which doesn't degrade in a short run anyways) and you just have to build it with extra layers for strength! Do me a favor, find that book for me -cool You just have to borrow it from Steve Carell... He just built another Ark this summer... I remember seeing him speed reading that book. Hmm... so i hope that you will build it for me then. Now now, that just used up your personal quota for optimism for the next millennia... OMG... AM BORED... >.<
^ Watch movies ma or have a late night snack consisting of a banana boat with vanilla ice cream and chocolate fudge...*miam miam*
Can't see anymore films, got to save the quota for TIFF, another 3 days!!! I kind of feel like Marvin the paranoid android now, minus the depressed part >.<
What time??? You mean time of the year? Or time of the day? It's the 1st Thursday after labour day until the Saturdays afterwards (this year it's Sept 6 - Sept 15) and screening ranges from morning (8:00am is the earliest I've seen so far) to midday to evening to Midnight Madness (name of one of the programs, all films start at 11:59pm)
Because downtown is a bit farther than I am incline to travel in order to be un-bored... GUH, I wish I live in downtown... uptown in the suburbs it's just SO overwhelmingly boring it's depressing.
Get your friends to go with you... if you were in my town, we can do that... holler at me when you feel bored then we go hang out hahaha
Your town is 5 too many hours away... Otherwise we can totally hang out. Since I am in perpetual boredom... Let me just go read some more HHGG and get in touch with my inner Marvin...
Your inner Marvin... now Hiake has a male side in her? This is some weird trends happening on PA. -unsure
Yup, let's hope that human technological actitvity will improve situation. In my opinion it would be not sto big and fast improvement. Just gradual process...But not now I think. Yeah, ok i agree. Even I wrote about an article in "Time", but in my opinion inviduals not improve situation. Other way, I think that whole society, whole groups can do it something ( not only by eco-life, but persuading governments, as well ). I think that Your expression ( coffin ) even for next generation is a bit exaggerated. But on the other hand humanity should be aware of their self-made threats. Ok we may stand a chance, but isn't too optimistic to think that Russia, China or USA would be sustainable by significant steps? As I wrote for me, it would be a slow, gradual improvement. And other hand, it's really difficult to change human view. For years being consumerist and now a huge change. Not so fast i think. Yup, ok we can say that this dogmatic war would be caused by lack of water or something like that, but not only a water is a "human's bread". Maybe I am a bit worry about Christian-civilization's interfering in Islam's affairs. Thoug it's another issue...
Yes yes, whatever you say... You, my good sir, has some weird traits in you too... Well, if human activity didn't speed up climatic change (we agreed on that right? Human activity didn't CREATE global warming/climate change, only sped things up), the slow and gradual improvement of technology (to off set the contribution of human activity to climate change) wouldn't be such a problem since both process (natural climatic change and technological advancement) are slow and gradual processes. It's only now, that we have climate change at our doorstep (of sorts) that we are SO desperate to off set it with some miracle technology. I think if we cannot practice what we preach (wanting to be environmentally friendly while driving a fuel inefficient car, wear only cotton clothing --> which is totally environmentally unfriendly, drinking luxury designer water from aboard which waste fuel for transport etc) It is impossible to persuade the government to take us seriously. Yes, I agree that consumer choices is not a hard and fast way to change the situation, but it buy us certain bargaining power. Just consider, how convincing can you get when you ask the government to sign on to the Kyoto protocol while maxing out the carbon emission quota on your new Bentley? Consumerism comes hand in hand with prosperity in modern times. I understand that, crystal clear. However, that's exactly where technology comes in, while everyone still get a new car, if all the "trendy" car are fuel efficient and have minimal impact on the environment, we can at least hope to minimize our cosumeristic impact on the environment (and resources) Well, we can keep on telling ourselves that global warming is an overblown issue and ignore it, but I am sure I don't want to know that I was part of the problem when the water lap at my feet just before my city, along with various others around the world, is flooded and engulfed by raising water level. Tolerance, it's just something in the myths. Self-righteousness has always been certain nation's Archille's heel... Then they do whatever THEY deem right and ruin other nations. But yes, I do agree this issue is at least partially unrelated to global warming... -sweat
Yes, i think so. Hmmm Human can afford thinking about some miracle technology which is able to slow smth. Why did I formulate that thesis? Look at the huge progress of civilization during dozen or so years. In this issue I can be more optimistic... Of course I know that not only technology can improve our situation. Ok, it's quite perspective but I am not still convinced of governments' activities. Maybe I am too pesimistic in this question or maybe history taught me something...taught me that it's really hard to buy certain bargaining power. But on the other hand, we ( humanity ) should do something, after all. Better doing smth than sitting on comfortable armchair. Only thing I can say here is "just hope"... That's good I don't live by sea or big river...;-) But be, more seriously I don't want same Hiake. It's a normal view. But we shouldn't behave like some ppl after watching "The Day After Tomorrow". The main effects will hit next generation. Now, we should prepare some pieces of advice for our children. Some kind of a ground beam. It's our task. Our conversation often turns somewhere far and i think it's not so much connected with Hyori's a...i mean voice ;p
Thus any action, albeit possibly futile, is better than inaction IMO. Oh, surely it would look nothing like The Day After Tomorrow, but climate change (it is established, at least between us, that it IS happening) at this scale can lead to flood and drought, which in turn lead to food shortage and famine, and then pandemics (due to the vast number of people dying within a short time frame). I personally would take the vision of Day After Tomorrow any day over a slow death, at least you don't actually have to SUFFER... -mellow Huh? What??? I am lost again... -huh
I wonder, if "THEY" are aware of it undeniably...but another pesimist would say that draughts and flood occured since human beginning. (civilization of Maya has been destroyed by draughts etc).. And turn aside again - do you think that our global civilization will survive? taking the vision of this movie is a good idea but when you can show something governments. Show it for persuasion. Altough it was not so important...I meant: not many public interest about this issue here ;p
I don't think so. The demise of civilizations is always near, if not expected. It may sound zen or pessimistic, but I think our current civilization is LONG OVERDUE on its downfall, so that's why we have to work so hard to keep ourselves from dying out... Which we should have (died out) long time ago. Modern medicine and technology helped us immensely, but at a global scale, I don't think we have anything to keep us from dying out at the moment, so one wrong turn and it can very likely to be the end of mankind. I wouldn't find that surprising. At all. I think it poked fun at how geocentric and self-righteous US is... So I think it's quite interesting to see. I am sure I am boring everyone to no end here, but meh. -tongue2
To say less scientifically, our civilization ( different than previous c. but based on previous, eternal ideas ) will collapse but our task is giving "our experience" to next more-evolutioned civilization. Say more philosophicalyy, our destiny is being another part of existence...or part of smth that even we are not able to define. But it's other issue, again ; -) Yeah...but i think it's better to come back to listening music, watching dramas than thinking about smth what is really painful for my head ;p
I guess my taste for music is affected by this issue too... I am ABSOLUTELY in love with this Quebecois song called "Plus Rien" by Cowboy Fringants... But too bad that the stupid MV didn't do the song NOR the lyrics justice >.<
