I was thinking more along the lines of:

Bu qui tong yue tong ri sheng, dan qui tong yue tong ri si...

 

Mandarin is prob better as more people speak it, if you do business in the mainland, mando will help so much. Plus even if you go HK many people can speak mando whereas not so many people in the mainland will speak canto.

I guess mando = more opportunities
But canto as TVB is in it -lol and many abroad chinese speak canto

Cantonese is what my parents speak so I've been brought up to speak that, my mandarin is terrible though.

Not really sure what I would learn if I spoke neither.

No. It's "bu qui tong yue tong ri sheng" not "bu que".

Trust me on this. My dad was from Beijing.

 

Well, it depends on what you want to do with Chinese.

Lots of foreigners (non-Chinese) people learn Manadarin because of the economic possibilities and the urgency and importance of the langauge as China will rise to the top of the world within the next 25 years.

But in my opinion, Cantonese is a more beautiful language because it is so orally and spontaneously expressive, so many things can only be said in Cantonese that don't exist in mandarin.

 

it's actuall "qiu" not "qui"

不 求 同 年 同 月 同 日 生
bu qiu tong nian tong yue tong ri sheng

但 願 同 年 同 月 同 日 死
dan yuan tong nian tong yue tong ri si


meaning something like "i don't care if we weren't born on the same day, if only we can die on the same day"

 

Well put it into context. Bu que tong ri tong ri sheng doesn't make sense anyway.

It's "bu qiu" as in 不求...

i think Mandarin's easier to learn, since there's pinyin and there are less tones than Canto.

first to start off, mandarin is ideal for beginner as it is easy and simple language(note: if you have a little background behind this). canto is a bit complicated.

 

I think Mandarin is definitely more useful than Cantonese in terms of population advantages, but it really depends on where you are and what people you're dealing with.
