I'm curious what does big boned mean? Can a petite girl be big boned? And somehow I had never heard this term being used to describe guys before......?

Some people literally have big thick bones but it's usually used by fat people as an ecxcuse for why they're so big. They say they're not fat and they just have big bones.

Some people use it as a nicer way of saying fat, but IMO it's not the same thing.

Fat describes actually being flabby. When I hear "fat", I think of rolls around the body.
Big boned describes people who are big, but it's not because they have a lot of fat, but because their bone structure may just be naturally bigger than others.

For example, Michelle Yi is big boned. She's thin, but she can't ever be a size small because her bones are naturally large. Lydia Shum is what I would consider fat.

The reason why you don't often hear people using this term when referring to guys is because guys are generally more big boned than girls. So being big boned is the norm for them, while for girls, it's the opposite.

It's common for people to use words improperly, especially when they don't bother to look up the meaning. Here's the definition from dictionary.com:

    Big-boned:

adj; having a bone structure that is massive in contrast with the surrounding flesh.
Fat is just having an excess of lipid/flesh/meat.

    Big difference.

Maybe in the streets you'd hear someone use the word big boned to describe a fat person, but I've never encountered this. Big boned is what it is... big-boned... widely built, but not fat.

Big boned, I do not think is the same as fat. I don't know why you guys call it the same thing. If a girl is 6 ft tall, and has broader shoulders, it doesn't make her fat. If you put the 6ft girl next to a 5'2 small girl, the former would be called big boned while the latter is called petite figure.

^ Not true. I actually consider myself equally big boned and petite.

When I was younger, my big boned structure was very obvious. But over the last 2 years, I have lost a lot of weight, and while my big boned structure is still obvious (wider hips, thicker legs), I consider myself petite because of my weight, height, and just my overall size (only 5'1", 110 lbs).

I'd say I'm a big boned petite, not your typical petite with very very slender arms/legs.

There are lots of things I can accept... but big boned being the same or similar to fat is something that I simply cannot believe...

It's like a lychee with a big seed being called fat, compared to a lychee with a small seed/core/whatever with a lot of flesh.

They're not the same... the one with the smaller seed is nicer, bigger and more juicy. [IMG]

Well some people might really be big boned but most people that call themselves big boned are just fat or fat+big boned

True. Big-bonedness is an excuse for fatness many times.

But sometimes you can just tell that someone is big-boned, especially female athletes, for sports like Soccer and Basketball, for example.
