Are you a good person?

  1. Are You a Good Person?

Do you consider yourself to be a good person? Most people do. However, most of us differ as to the definition of "good." The Bible says that God is good, and the Ten Commandments are His standard of goodness. So, we will look at God's Law . . . With a tender conscience, ask yourself if you have obeyed the following:

    1. You shall have no other gods before Me.(Have you always loved God above all else?)

    2. You shall not make yourself an idol. (Have you made a god in your mind that you're more comfortable with, a god to suit yourself?)

    3. You shall not take God's name in vain. (Have you ever used God's holy Name as a cuss word?)

    4. Remember theSabbath Day, to keep it holy.

    5. Honor your father and mother.

    6. You shall not murder. (God considers hatred to be as murder).

    7. You shall not commit adultery. ("Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart" — Matthew 5:27-28; this also includes sex before marriage).

    8. You shall not steal. (Have you ever stolen anything?— the value of the item is irrelevant).

    9. You shall not lie. (Have you lied even once?Including answering these questions).

    10. You shall not covet. (Have you ever jealously desired what belongs to others?)

The Bible says that God will punish all murderers, rapists, thieves, liars, adulterers, etc. He will even judge our words and thoughts. On Judgment Day, will you be found to be guilty or innocent of breaking His commandments?

Perhaps you think that God is good, and will therefore overlook your sins. But it is His goodness that will make sure that murderers, rapists, thieves, liars, etc. receive justice. He would be a corrupt Judge if He turned a blind eye to injustice. Have you kept the Commandments?

The Bible says that the Law is perfect. It commands you to be perfect (Matthew 5:48). Are you perfect (in thought, word, and deed)? Will you make it to Heaven? You may say that you are still good, but God says you're not (see Psalm 14:2-3).So one of you is lying, and the Scriptures tell us that it is impossible for God to lie. Remember that all liars will be cast into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8). God's Law demands justice, and the penalty for sinning against Him is death and Hell. Listen carefully if you want to live.

God Himself made a waywhere His justice and His goodness could meet. We broke the Law, but He became a man to pay the fine. Jesus suffered and died on the cross to satisfy the Law. God can forgive us and grant us the gift of everlasting life! But you may still think that you can (from now on) keep the Ten Commandments. But isn't it true that the best of us have lied, stolen, lusted, hated, failed to love God above all else, and failed to love our neighbor as ourselves?

How can we then, live a "good" life if we have already sinned against God? At best we are reformed liars and thieves. . . but still Law breakers. Think of it this way - would you sell one of your eyes for a million dollars? Would you sell both for $50 million? I'm sure you wouldn't. Your eyes are priceless, yet they are merely the windows of your soul. What then must your life (soul) be worth? With these thoughts in mind, what would be a fair price to pay for everlasting life? It is utterly without price. Yet, if we trust in our own goodness to enter Heaven, we are saying to God, "I should enter Heaven because I have done good - I have earned my way in."

Imagine if you wanted to give me a brand new (veryexpensive) car, but I said, "I can't take it! I feel embarrassed receiving such a gift . . . here's 10 cents for it. "I'm sure you would be very insulted by such a pathetic offer of payment. Besides, if I pay for it, it is no longer a gift, it's a purchase . . . it's mine by right.

When we talk of entering Heaven by being good, by trying to keep the Ten Commandments etc., we are tossing God 10 cents of "self-righteousness," which is a terrible insult to Him, in the light of His sacrifice. The only thing we can do is humble ourselves, repent of our sins, and receive the gift by trusting Jesus Christ alone. Almighty God demonstrated how much He loves you when Jesus suffered for you on the cross. If you want to trust in your own goodness, then you are saying His agonizing death on the cross was in vain. The Bible says, "For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God." You cannot earn a gift.

When Jesus said to "believe" on Him, He was saying we should have faith in Him, in the same way you would trust a parachute to save you when you jump from a plane. You don't merely believe in the parachute - you put it on. Please don't "jump" without Jesus. If you die in your sins there is no second chance. God will give you justice, and you will end up in Hell forever.Any troubles you have at present are dwarfed by the trouble you are in with your Creator. His wrath abides upon you (John 3:36).God doesn't want you to go to Hell. Neither do you want to go there, so confess your sins to God right now, put your trust in Jesus to save you, and you will pass from death to life. Then read the Bible daily and obey what you read. (See John 14:21). Your obedience to God is the proof of your love. Have faith in God, He will never fail you.

    Pray something like this:

"Dear God, today I turn away from all of my sins (name them). This day I put my trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. He is the only way for me to be saved. He is 'The way, the truth, and the life.'" Please forgive me, change my heart, and grant me Your gift of everlasting life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen."

    3. You shall not take God's name in vain. (Have you ever used God's holy Name as a cuss word?)
Oops....im guilty of this....i know its a very bad habit though...

    4. Remember theSabbath Day, to keep it holy.
    -sweat i work on sundays?

    7. You shall not commit adultery. ("Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart" — Matthew 5:27-28; this also includes sex before marriage).
I find it hard to believe ANYONE hasnt break this one...unless its a nun or a monk

    8. You shall not steal. (Have you ever stolen anything?— the value of the item is irrelevant).
i think ive stolen like a few 10cents out of my father's wallet when i was a kiddo
and some pencils when i was in primary...-noclue

    9. You shall not lie. (Have you lied even once?Including answering these questions).

guilty...i lie sometimes...but in the benefit of others...e.g. i lived together with a guy & i trust myself and know that theres nothing going on ( he was JUST a housemate) but i knew my mother would worry sick if she'd find out
so i just told her i lived with a girl....

    10. You shall not covet. (Have you ever jealously desired what belongs to others?)
This is something you cant control sometimes...IMO....lets say u and ur ex bf break up...
he has a new girl and im jealous....isnt that normal?
    we are not robots...?

    I guess im a bad catholic....i dont mean i guess...i should say...i know...=/
but then again...we are only human....and human beings have flaws
not an excuse..its a known fact... nobody is perfect
I know i should do more with it and take more time to understand my own religion...
no buts cuz....i dont have any valid excuses of why im not doing it

    One last Q...out of curiosity
    Master_G, are u a good person? Or should i say...do U THINK U are a good person?
Ur not breaking these laws period (after u became christian)?

    -edit
    about point 7
if i havent misread...it says u have sinned if u have just THOUGHT about havin sex with someone right?

& this bit He will even judge our words and thoughts.
its a sin if u think bad things...but how can we control our thoughts?

  3. ^ HEY ANGIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I broken them all before i was Christian, and i do break some now and again even now. NOBODY can fulfil all these commandments. true about the thoughts.

    lol -sweat
    surprised to see me here?
anyway..yeah just felt like sharing my point of view on this....

but ok..when i read all that...i have the feeling that god expects us to be perfect
    its simply un-doable
im far from perfect...i guess i will burn in hell for centuries...-cry2

  5. ^ true its impossible, But we are perfect and without blemish through Jesus. by our own effort we fall short of God. Thats why Jesus lived a perfect life on our behalf and took our past and future sins on himself. basically we no longer live by the law but by grace.

But we still have to follow the commandments even though we will fall now and again.

yeah no one can say they've obeyed all of these. it's just human to sin. but the important thing is that we try to obey them as much as possible

    1. You shall have no other gods before Me.(Have you always loved God above all else?)

There are some people who are obsessed with lovin god and in result don't care about anyone else that is actually living and part of there lives. Does that make them a good person...we all have different opinions...

    3. You shall not take God's name in vain. (Have you ever used God's holy Name as a cuss word?)
    Holy shit?

    7. You shall not commit adultery. ("Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart" — Matthew 5:27-28; this also includes sex before marriage).

    This is the 21st century....

After this most PA dudes would've sinned haha....

    9. You shall not lie. (Have you lied even once?Including answering these questions).

"This day I put my trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. He is the only way for me to be saved."

I think that's a lie so praying makes you a bad person...

i believe that i am, and i don't think that you'd have to be christian to be good, nor do you have to have followed the 10 commandments in order to be good. so there, now slam me, haters!!!

  9. word. well said lol

no offense to hardcore Bible followers, but havent you thought that since the Bible is merely a collection of stories that are passed on and are interpreted differently, that it could be subjected to hearsay? i mean.. hypothetically speaking, what if the Bible was wrong, obviously due to misinterpretation, changes to stories throughout time?

  10. God has preserved His Word. in the spring of 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. These manuscripts were copies of large portions of the old testament a thousand years older than any other existing copies. Study of the scrolls has revealed that the bible hasn't hanged in content down through the ages as many sceptics had surmised.

Anyone can now obtain access to computer programs that can give the original Hebrew and Greek words, and the only "changes" have been made for clarity. For example, the old English translations of Corinthians 12:8 is "For this thing i besought the Lord thrice....," while a contemporary translation is "Concerning this thing i pleaded with the Lord three times..."

Psalm 120:160 "Your Word is true from the beginning; and every one of your righteous judgements endures forever" - in this we trust.

Im wondering, does white lies count as lying? For example - if ure best friend put great effort to make u a cake. and after that asked u if the cake tasted good (which it didnt), wat wud u say?

But yes im a pretty gud person - i basically follow the ten commandments, sometimes i cudnt help it. like wen i was 5 i took a cookie from a jar that was my mums, i guess that's stealing? but even at that time i didnt no wat stealing was

I'm a good person. I give to the world value, I don't expect anything in return.

Rather than say "What can I get?". Ask yourself "What can I give?".

yeah but master g, that's what u go by as ur guideline to being a good person. urs. not mine. u feel that there is a need to put God first and foremost in order to be a good person. i don't. u might answer then that i am not a good person. again, that is also ur opinion.
too much of this religion talk lately...

  15. ^ hello lee-lee.

IF the God of the bible is real then those laws are absolute regardless of whether you believe in it or not.
BUT if im wrong then you have nothing to worry about rite... BUT if im right then these are the laws you will be judged by. hope you understand that. :D

and dont forget to hug a rainbow :p

anyway you can give me a PS3 if you want to live up to that statement.... :D

According to the ten commandments proposed by Christianity, whose origin is debatable. I am not a good person.

However, I fail to see how that would change how I view myself as a decent, good human being. Muslims and Islamics had in their canon, respectively, that believers of other religions are bad person. Would that make all Christians bad? Failing that, if you don't believe in the metric system (not that it's something to "believe in"), does that mean anything that you measure 1.80m tall? That number was just pulled out of nowhere from an arbitray measure, which doesn't apply if you don't hold the same measure yourself.

This arbitrary meterstick only applies to those willing to be measured. To people who are skeptical of the religion, it is meaningless.
