Why is depression linked to food?

Everytime I get really depressed or down I lose my appetite. I don't seem to be hungry and everything seems to have lost its flavour/taste and if I eat it, I will feel sick?

I've heard that other people when they get depressed they eat loads and loads and can't stop.

When we get depressed does our body produce chemicals, hormones etc to make us feel like this?

That's not good, you have to eat even if you are depressed.

Its cause different part of the brain is in function. When u eat chocolate for example u release serotonin that make u happy, because it goes to the orbitofrontal cortex and creates a sensation of good. When u are sad u can inhibit those serotonin releasing neurons. But ppl are depressed usually eat alot more chocolate and such stuff, not food. Usually MSG or fat food that gives alot of seratonin sensation. They try to up the low level.

Chronic depression, as a disease, is linked to a hormonal imbalance, particularly the hormone serotonin like manun mentioned. When you are feeling particularly and consistently depressed the biological perspective would say that you are low on serotonin which is impairing your cognitive functioning. By not eating you are only perpetuating your depression. Because eating releases serotonin in areas of your central nervous system, it should help you to feel better faster. People who eat lots when they are depressed are likely unconsciously trying to fix their hormonal imbalance and negative feelings by eating alot of sugary or fatty foods.

The fact you aren't eating suggests a psychological issue that might be linked to something else in your life. Perhaps the fact eating makes you sick when you are depressed could be due to your mind unconsciously punishing yourself for feeling the way you are feeling. This could be due to anger, embarrassment or some sort of disappointment. Basically though, everyone is different, and the best way to address depression is to talk to someone your close to about it, or a counselor.
