The 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards concluded on January 21, with Vincent Wong (王浩信) and Natalie Tong (唐詩詠) winning Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. Joel Chan (陳山聰) won Best Supporting Actor, while Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗) won Best Supporting Actress. The race this year was especially tight, as the media swayed in different directions over potential wins prior to the awards ceremony.

Best Actor: Vincent Wong for Legal Mavericks

Winning the Best Actor award for Legal Mavericks <踩過界> at Singapore’s Starhub TVB Awards in October, Vincent Wong was once again honored at the TVB Anniversary Awards. In his ten-year career at TVB, Vincent has slowly worked his way up from supporting roles to main lead.

Crying emotionally while accepting his Best Actor award, Vincent said, “When my bank savings was only in the double digits, thanks to TVB8 for asking me to host a music variety program, and made me be in high demand. Thanks to my family in giving me so much love under different circumstances. No matter how physically [tired] I am, you give me a safe haven to come back to so I can focus on my work. Thanks to my parents who allowed me to pursue my dream although I have not given them a dollar in the last thirteen years. Thanks to my wife YoYo Chen(陳自瑤)who has taken such good care of our home! Also, I would like to thank my grandfather.”

Best Actress: Natalie Tong for My Unfair Lady

Ali Lee (李佳芯) and Jessica Hsuan (宣萱) won Best Actress awards in Singapore and Malaysia respectively, which drummed up speculation that either actress would repeat their victory at the TVB Anniversary Awards. However, this week the media reported that Natalie Tong extended her TVB contract in exchange for the station’s top award. While the 36-year-old shot down the rumors, Natalie managed to break through the competition.

Natalie was emotional when she stepped to the podium for the Best Actress award. Natalie was grateful for My Unfair Lady <不懂撒嬌的女人> in allowing her acting to shine and thanked TVB, her colleagues, as well as Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) for being a friend and mentor, “I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to thank you while being on stage. [She is] a person I really like; she gives me acting guidance and always listens to my problems.” Finally, Natalie thanked her deceased mother, “Although my mom is no longer here, I’ve been thinking of you all the time. I remembered what you taught me before. I know I’m not perfect, but I’ve always tried my best in acting out different roles.”

    Best Supporting Actor: Joel Chan

Joel Chan has always been a solid actor, but his controversial relationship with heiress Florinda Ho (何超雲) had nearly ruined his career seven years ago. However, the breakup and subsequent career standstill only made Joel more determined to work harder in his TVB comeback.

Last year, Joel shined in three dramas: May Fortune Shine on You <財神駕到>, Burning Hands <乘勝狙擊>, and The Unholy Alliance <同盟>. Accepting his award on stage, Joel thanked TVB and everyone for their support, as well as his deceased father. Joel added humbly, “This moment marks another step forward in my lifelong marathon.”

    Best Supporting Actress: Rebecca Zhu

After winning Miss Hong Kong 2011, Rebecca Zhu has been appearing in numerous TVB dramas. She recently even got promoted to lead actress in the upcoming The Stunt <特技人>. However, winning Best Supporting Actress came as a surprise for Rebecca as well as viewers.

Rebecca said, “I didn’t think I would get an award! I started from nothing! When I joined the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, I didn’t know one single Cantonese word.” Reflecting on her initial struggles in TVB, Rebecca thanked executive Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍), “Thank you for calling me and expressing your concern, and telling me how to enunciate clearly and pointing out the problems in my acting.” After an awkward pause, Rebecca added, “Hope the children who grew up in Mainland China and came to Hong Kong can find success here.”

Kenneth Ma: My Favorite Male Character

Nominated ten times for Best Actor, Kenneth Ma (馬國明) posed as the strongest competitor for Vincent Wong in this year’s race. Despite media buzz and fan support, Kenneth ended up winning the My Favorite Male Character award instead for his performance in The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的>.

Kenneth said, “I didn’t think I would get an award. Thanks to The Exorcist’s Meter‘s producer. I said that it’s hard to come across a good script in a lifetime and The Exorcist’s Meter was definitely one of them. I don’t know what to say. Although TVB told me that I can’t thank a particular person, but many female artistes ignored the notice [to dress conservatively], so I won’t hold back either! Thank you Miss Virginia Lok (樂易玲) for treating me so well although I don’t always listen to you. You’ve been scolding me in the 17 years that I’ve been here. Thank you to the cast and crew of The Exorcist Meter and everyone at TVB!”

Sisley Choi: My Favorite Female Character

Since winning first runner-up at Miss Hong Kong 2013, Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) has quickly ascended the ranks at TVB and heavily cast in many dramas. Winning My Favorite Female Character for Legal Mavericks, Sisley appeared to be shocked and her eyes grew red. She thanked many people on stage and was grateful for the opportunity to star in the drama.

    Other Awards

Mat Yeung (楊 明) won Most Improved Actor and Mayanne Mak (麥美恩) won Most Improved Actress. My Ages Apart <誇世代> won for Best Drama, while The Exorcist’s Meter was voted as the Global Online Favorite Drama award. Carol Cheng‘s (鄭裕玲) Dodo Goes Shopping, Season 2 <Do姐再shopping> won Best Variety Show and Hosting awards.

So many dislikes on Nat Tong & Vincent video on Youtube.. guess HK-netz didn't think they deserve it. Their speeches are up on TVB youtube channel if you want to add them to the main post.

Here is the top 5 nominees for those interested.

    Best Actor
    • Vincent in Legal Mavs
    • Ruco in Unholy Alliance
    • Michael Miu in Line Walker
    • Kenneth Ma in Exorcist Meter
    • Moses in My Ages Apart
I haven't watched My Ages Apart so I can't comment on Moses performance, but out of the other 4 I think I do prefer Vincent's the most.

    Best Actress
    • Jessica in My Unfair Lady
    • Natalie in My Unfair Lady
    • Nina in Unholy Alliance
    • Nancy in Unholy Alliance
    • Ali in My Ages Apart
Again can't comment on Ali (unless she was nominated for her role in Legal Mavs), but I do say I'm surprised by Top 5 nomination and winner of Nat Tong. Do I like her role in My Unfair Lady? Yes. Do I think it was Best Actress worthy? Ehh. It wasn't anything outstanding but I don't think any actress really took over this year. I'm pretty much indifferent with this one.

    ~~

Joel well deserved Best Supporting. The other top 5 were Andrew Yuen, Owen, Jimmy Au (KC), and Anthony Ho (fat guy in Exorcist). I'd rank them as Joel > KC > Owen.

Rebecca for Best Supporting female, is questionable. Of the top 5, I think i might've preferred Elaine performance in Unholy instead..

Matt Yeung for most improved. I would've thought it would be Matthew Ho because TVB is pushing him. Owen Cheung was also a nominee.

Mayanne (lmao Macau) for female most improved. I would say this one was surprise because I think she's just a host. Good for TVB to acknowledge their hosts.

Line Walker with the goose egg in awards.

Really, I'll need to watch that next then...
Agree!! And surprised by Rebecca, the mainlanders must have threaten TVB or something haha...I don't know if she really deserves it as I haven't seen her in any of 2017 series...But I think Elaine would have been the better choice too....And she was so hot in Unholy :p

Ages didn't make much sense and story choppy but it was just funny watching it.
You need to pay attention to either the stories/people or the things that happen in background.
This drama made me kind of disliked (felt like thats how she is in real life more than acting) that anjaya chan or whatever her name is.
