Apr. 30, 2007 - Lisa Lenning's kids keep her so busy she had to work them into her weight loss routine. "My son, who is 9, goes to school and says, 'My mommy lost this amount of weight this week,' " says Lenning. Three months ago, Lisa was 58 pounds heavier. Dr Channing Bolick, a chiropractor, put Lisa on his cleanse diet. He claims it rids the body of toxins found in the environment, in food, even in makeup. Dr. Bolick: "The body will naturally surround a toxin with fat. So if you get the toxin out of the fat, the body will naturally burn the fat." The first two days include aloe-vera-based mineral drinks -- snack tablets to keep your blood sugar level, and water -- lots of water. Dr. Bolick: "You take half your body weight, divide it in half and put ounces at the end." That means a 200-pound person would need to drink 100 ounces of water a day. You gradually add a protein shake and light lunches. Then it's back to water. But is that a good idea? Dr. Michael Hirt, an internist, says there's such a thing as too much water. Dr. Hirt: "You can drink too much water... that is not good for you." And nutritionist Meredith Luce questions the "cleanse" theory. Luce: "Instead of doing the aloe vera, and all the other various things that go along with it, that getting realistic and recognizing that you've got to eat less." Luce says it doesn't take nine, but 21 days, to break bad eating habits. But Lisa Lenning is working hard to make sure her weight loss is permanent. _________________________________________________________________
I think it's not going to work, because a lot of people are going to be water-poisoned and dies. Many don't realize that it is possible to have too much water. Overloading your renal system is never a good idea... -unsure
That's the whole point, "flushing your system to detox" or so they says... Don't think it's an effective dieting regime... except if you want to die of eletrolyte imbalance...
Frankly while most fad diets DO work in achieving weight loss, chances are they are not permanent weight loss and actually contribute to weight gains in the end, resulting in the yoyo effect. http://cookiemonzters.blogspot.com/2006/11/never-starve-yourself-to-lose-weight.html Read this article I did and you'll understand
Of course diets are only temporary. If you were eating properly and exercising regularly you wouldn't need to go on a diet in the first place. And what happens once the dieter reaches his/her goal? He/she goes back to their normal routine, and back comes the weight. Also, water diet does not sound like a very good idea. How about a fruit and fiber diet to flush out your system?
Besides a water diet, there's the actual water fasting and juice fasting, where you consume nothing but water/juice depending on which type of fast. OK personally I have done the lemonade diet aka Master Cleanser to detox for thirty days. It's pretty good and it received rave reviews when Beyonce did it for her role in Dreamgirls to lose weight. It's a diet meant for detoxification primarily but the side effect of it is weight loss I can post my experience here if anyone is interested I have come across an article where a 90-yr-old man got rid of his cancerous cells after fasting on carrot juice for three months. That's the power of juice healing. As for water fast, it's more dramatic but purists prefer it to juicing mainly because it gives faster results. Unlike a juice fast, water fast is dangerous if done for a prolonged period. The usual acceptable period is up to ten days. And one will feel weak on a water fast compared to juice fasting. Extract from an article: Fasting and Healing Fasting has been found to help a number of disease conditions, often permanently. There have been a number of intriguing clinical trials and studies treating numerous disease conditions with fasting. Here are some of those findings. * In one clinical trial of hypertension and fasting, 174 people with hypertension were prefasted for 2-3 days by eating only fruits and vegetables. They then participated in a 10-11 day water only fast, followed by a 6-7 day post fast in which they ate only a low-fat, low- sodium vegan diet. Initial blood pressure in the participants was either in excess of 140 millimeters of mercury (mm HG) systolic or 90 diastolic or both. Ninety percent of the participants achieved blood pressure less than 140/90 by the end of the trial. The higher their initial blood pressure the more their readings dropped. The average drop for all participants was 37/13. Those with stage 3 hypertension (over 180/110) had an average reduction of 60/17. All those taking blood pressure medication prior to fasting were able to discontinue it. Fasting has been shown in a number of trials like this one to be one of the most effective methods for lowering blood pressure and normalizing cardiovascular function. Blood pressure tends to remain low in all those using fasting for cardiovascular disease once fasting is completed. * Fasting is exceptionally beneficial in chronic cardiovascular disease and congestive heart failure, reducing triglycerides, atheromas, total cholesterol, and increasing HDL levels. * Fasting has been found effective in the treatment of type II diabetes, often reversing the condition permanently. * Because of its long term effects on metabolism, fat stores in the body, leptin, and disease conditions associated with obesity, fasting has been found to be one of the most effective treatments for obesity. * A number of studies have found that fasting is beneficial in epilepsy, reducing the length, number, and severity of seizures. Fasting is especially effective for helping alleviate or cure childhood epilepsy. * In a 1988 trial of 88 people with acute pancreatitis, fasting was found better than any other medical intervention. Neither nasogastric suction or cimetidine were found to produce as beneficial effects as those from fasting. Symptoms were relieved irrespective of the etiology of the disease. * A number of studies have found that fasting is effective for treating both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Fasting induces significant antiinflammatory actions in the body and researchers found decreased ESR, arthralgia, pain, stiffness, and need for medication. * Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rosacea, chronic urticaria, and acute glomerulonephritis have all responded well to fasting. * Severe toxic contamination has been shown to be significantly helped with fasting. Clinical trials have found that people poisoned with PCB experienced "dramatic" relief after 7-10 day fasts. * Poor immune function improves during fasting. Studies have found that there is increased macrophage activity, increased cell-mediated immunity, decreased complement factors, decreased antigen-antibody complexes, increased immunoglobulin levels, increased neutrophil bactericidal activity, depressed lymphocyte blastogenesis, heightened monocyte killing and bactericidal function, and enhanced natural killer cell activity. * Other diseases that have responded to fasting are: psychosomatic disease, neurogenic bladder, psoriasis, eczema, thrombophlebitis, varicose ulcers, fibromyalgia, neurocirculatory disease, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, bronchial asthma, lumbago, depression, neurosis, schizophrenia, duodenal ulcers, uterine fibroids, intestinal parasites, gout, allergies, hay fever, hives, multiple sclerosis, and insomnia. * The historically lengthy claim that fasting increases life span is beginning to garner some support in research literature. Regularly repeated 4-day fasting has been found to increase the life span in normal and immunocompromised mice. * Although the use of fasting in the treatment of cancer is controversial, there is some emerging data SHOWING that fasting helps prevent cancer. Intermittent fasting (2 days weekly) has shown an inhibitory effect on the development of liver cancer in rats.
^ so juice fasting does not have the negative effects unlike water fasting? and is healing at the same time? hmm..
Hmmm, I am always skeptical in regards to the miraculous effect of things. But it's just me. Lemonade fasting probably is slightly better than water fasting (since lemonade contain some sort of sugar/protein<-not really/nutrients and is slightly acidic unlike water) It does have detox effect althought I am not sure how much does it affect weight loss... But then again, take all these fad diet with a pinch of salt...
^This is not a fad diet, it's a detoxification fast ie a cleanse. Everyone can benefit from a cleanse once in a while. Imagine our body, taking in all the food for as long as we have lived... And this cleanse is sort of like a break to our digestive system becoz it's purely liquid diet. The bonus part of it is you lose weight as well, although the book says that for underweight people, you would actually put on weight instead of losing. It's sort of like a readjustment to your metabolism and bodily functions etc. Weight loss is quite often rapid, therefore it is a favourite for those who search for a fast way to lose weight. Interestingly, if you eat carefully after your fast, you will put back some weight, but not ALL the weight that you have shed and unlike those fad diets, you DO actually feel the desire to eat more healthily. The first few days or so, all i felt like eating was salad. There are of course, water fasting, juice fasting and there's also the lemonade diet which is sort of in-between a water fast and juice fast, as it's higher caloric content than a water fast (which is 0) and lower than a juice fast (you wld be surprised that juice contains quite a lot of calories) Here is an extract taken from the Stanley Burroughs Master Cleanser book, this diet was developed by him in 1941. THE MASTER CLEANSE OR LEMONADE DIET Purpose To dissolve and eliminate toxins and congestion that have formed in any part of the body. To cleanse the kidneys and the digestive system. To purify the glands and cells throughout the entire body. To eliminate all unusable waste and hardened material in the joints and muscles. To relieve pressure and irritation in the nerves, arteries, and blood vessels. To build a healthy blood stream. To keep youth and elasticity regardless of our years. When to use it? When sickness has developed— for all acute and chronic conditions. When the digestive system needs a rest and a cleansing. When overweight has become a problem. When better assimilation and building of body tissue is needed. How often? Follow the diet for a minimum of 10 days or more— up to 40 days and beyond may be safely followed for extremely serious cases. The diet has all the nutrition needed during this time. Three to four times a year will do wonders for keeping the body in a normal healthy condition. The diet may be undertaken more frequently for serious conditions. The book recommends a period of 10 days, but I have tried up to 15 days doing lemonade diet, followed by alternative of lemonade and juice fasting for the next 13 days and 2 days of water fasting in between. For the first 3 days or so, I felt hunger, immensely of course. But in days to come, I experienced the various detoxification symptoms as described (caffeine withdrawal was one) and subsequently felt very energetic, I sleep less hours yet wake up fresh, no more any backaches, stomachaches etc. I thought of it rather like a computer system reboot. Planning to do it again in a couple of days to come. Of course, if u r interested, you can google this and there's quite a number of forums/support boards around. There you can read about lots of other people's experiences with the fast.
^ Yeah, but what I mean by fad diet are diets that you cannot maintain for prolonged periods of time =_=b You can detox alright... but you can't just live on lemonade for a year <_<
^^thx babyrain its information that kept me occupied but umm is it anykind of lemonade cause there are some with ALOT of sugar
@Hiake: Ah i c, i always think of fad diets as something that don't really work ie the weight comes back once u get off the diets. Btw, this is a good way for those obese/overweight people to jumpstart their diet, sort of like a cold turkey thing instead of following some other 'food' diet which actually messes with our metabolism unlike this one. And weight loss can be seen in the first 3 days itself (if u are overweight.. for those normal weight people, it'll take longer) up to 6lbs! Continual weight loss will be seen throughout the diet until your body has reached an optimal weight and ur weight loss will then hit a plateau. @Nyckeion:No this is not any kind of lemonade... Good question indeed. If u r really interested in trying it out, u can google it. But the preparations of the lemonade requires a mixture of fresh lemonade juice (squeezed) - 2 tablespoons and 2 tablespoons of MAPLE SYRUP, Grade B. Ideally u can use sugarcane juice, if you can find that. AND a pinch of cayenne pepper! (Yup!) U cannot use any other types of syrup or sugar or honey... The maple syrup is a balanced form of positive and negative sugar and must be used, not some "substitute. "There are three grades of maple syrup. Grade A is the first run - mild in taste, sweet and with less minerals than the other grades. It is more expensive and less desirable but it may be used. Grade B is the second run with more minerals plus more maple taste. It is more suitable for the diet and is less expensive. Grade C is the third run with even more minerals and still stronger taste of maple and slightly less pleasant for most people, although acceptable in the diet. It is lower in price. As Grade C is less expensive it can be used as an excellent sweetening agent in preparing foods. The strong maple flavor blends very well. The maple syrup has a large variety of minerals and vitamins. Naturally, the mineral and vitamin content will vary according to the area where the trees grow and the mineral content in the soil. These are the minerals found in average samples of syrup from Vermont: Sodium; Potassium; Calcium; Magnesium; Manganese; Iron; Copper; Phosphorus; Sulphur; Chlorine and Silicon. Vitamin A, Bl, B2, B6, C, Nicotinic acid and Pantothenic acid are also present in the syrup. Honey must not be used at any time internally. It is manufactured from the nectar picked up from the flowers by the bees - good enough in itself, perhaps - then predigested, vomited and stored for their own future use with a preservative added. It is deficient in calcium and has many detrimental effects for the human being. Just as with alcohol, honey, being predigested, enters the blood directly, raising the sugar content very rapidly above normal. To correct this, the pancreas must produce insulin immediately or possible death can occur. More insulin than necessary is likely to be produced, and the blood sugar level then drops below normal. This can produce blackout spells and even death if it goes too low. When blood sugar is below normal, a person will feel depressed. The regular use of honey can create constant imbalances, which in turn will adversely affect the normal function of the liver, pancreas and spleen. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are the results of the use of unbalanced sugars. The balanced sugar in maple syrup and sugar cane juice causes no dangerous side effects. All natural fruits and vegetables have balanced sugars in them. Artificial, synthetic, and refined sugars have no place in a natural diet. Adding the cayenne pepper is necessary as it breaks up mucus and increases warmth by building the blood for an additional lift. It also adds many of the B and C vitamins. Cayenne pepper will also raise your metabolism rate encouraging more weight loss. And of course, the elimination process is VERY VERY important in this fast. So we had to follow some elimination steps as well or else the toxins circulating in our body won't be flushed out easily. Sort of like sweeping the floor but nowhere to dump the rubbish. The more elimination one does, the less detoxification symptoms one'll haf to endure.
^thx babyrain i will try to get those things together not really dieting more of how you say very "hot air" detoxin is a good choice
@Nyckeion:Here's the link for a more detailed look. http://www.geocities.co.jp/Beautycare-Venus/2032/english/master_cleanser.html And if you are really doing it, feel free to ask me any questions if u haf any doubts. I'll try to help if I have gone thru it b4... haha.
Benefits that I have personally felt after/during the cleanse: 1. Weight loss. 2. More energetic and refreshed, need less hours of sleep. 3. Headaches/stomachaches/backaches are rare. 4. Skin is softer, seems slightly brighter. 5. The desire to eat healthily (be careful with this, once u start to eat junk/processed food , your body will slowly 'get used' again) 6. If you are a coffee/tea/soft-drink lover, you'll find that you no longer crave those. Cured sugar cravings. (Again, this will depend on how much ur coffee etc. intake after the cleanse, and if ur body gets used to it again, u'll start having cravings)
