Also Known As: Tokyo Family Directed by: Yoji Yamada Country: Japan Language: Japanese Year: 2013 Genre: Drama, Family Cast Isao Hashizume, Kazuko Yoshiyuki, Satoshi Tsumabuki, Yu Aoi Synopsis Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 masterpiece Tokyo Story is regarded by many as the greatest film in the history of Japanese cinema, a finely wrought tale of human fragility amidst the rampant social upheaval of post-war Japan. In Tokyo Family, 81-year-old modern master Yôji Yamada transports Ozu's opus to the Japan of today - a country where economic hope has waned and the threat to tradition is more pronounced than ever. Elderly Shukichi and Tomiko swap their remote island home for Tokyo to spend some time with their three grown-up and very different children. Overcome with the stresses of the city, the kids absently shuffle their parents from one to the other, but when Tomiko has a stroke, everything they thought they valued is thrown into devastating relief... 1953 Thanks B-Lee for the 2013 version. Download the 1953 version This black and white mkv has Japanese, Cantonese and Mandarin audio and Chinese subs. A very social educational film about mortality. One of the best classics of the post war Japanese cinema. Tokyo Story has appeared several times in The British Film Institute polls of "greatest films" of directors and critics published in Sight & Sound. On the critics' poll, it was third in 1992, fifth in 2002, and third again in 2012. John Walker, former editor of the Halliwell's Film Guides, places Tokyo Story at the top of his published list of the best 1000 films ever made. Tokyo Story is also included in film critic Derek Malcolm's The Century of Films, a list of films which he deems artistically or culturally important, and Time magazine lists it among its All-Time 100 Movies. Roger Ebert includes it in his series of great movies, and Paul Schrader placed it in the "Gold" section of his Film Canon. You can also compare this with a German remake : Cherry Blossoms (German: Kirschblüten – Hanami) is a 2008 German film directed by Doris Dörrie. The old couple comes from a Bavarian village and the story culminates in a pilgrimage to Mount Fuji in the midst of the cherry blossom season, a celebration of beauty, impermanence, and new beginnings. This is the German remake in 2008 on Youtube http://www.you...tube.com/watch?v=iwW75o4m7Hc (just cut and paste after taking out the three dots) Youtube title is : "Cherry Blossoms, Kirschblüten, 花見 : rêve japonais" but the dialogue is in French. This German version too won many German accolades. and was very highly rated in France too.
A worthwhile view for the 2013 (50th anniversary of the original), a cast of best actors and actresses with atmospheric music in the background of a slow paced set 2:26. The slowness allowed one to reflect on one's life experiences and to this extent, one can compare the alarming degree of resemblance of one's actual experience with that of the film. Hence the dilemma for all the families, the cost of living and the hectic demands of life takes a toll on family values. And of course almost everyone gets old and possibly lonely too but little do we realise this till we are old ourselves. The 2013 Japanese remake is sad when the grandmother dies unexpectedly. Then German story is along the same social theme and challenges the parent and siblings values for each other. I think the German version is well worth seeing and does contain sharp contrasting scenes towards the latter part of the film... the man dies and leaves a young girl a lot of money (euros) and hence concludes the value statement of one's sibling versus friendship from a complete stranger in a strange land. So here it is a very beautifully made version, Kirschblüten – Hanami, poster in above post (German audio) with excellent music (go to subscene for the English subs - Asister version):- http://netload.in/dateia3974d4509/cblossoms-proper-asister.part1.rar.htm http://netload.in/datei205f3c8d1a/cblossoms-proper-asister.part2.rar.htm http://netload.in/dateiMzIyMjQzNj/cblossoms-proper-asister.part3.rar.htm http://netload.in/dateiMTI5NzQ3Nz/cblossoms-proper-asister.part4.rar.htm
I learnt that this Tokyo Family is a strong candidate for top ten best films of 2013 in キネマ旬報 but we would not know if it did until the year end or in Jan 2014.
