Watch through this. its really touching and may get you doubters thinking =) and inspire current-believers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piuoGb-Nhfw&feature=channel_page
The story seems highly suspect to me... I sincerely doubt any professor, regardless of his tenure would be able to get away with actively promoting religious or anti-religious views in class for 20 years. This is just another tale of how Christians are the poor, oppressed martyrs in any situation where science and religion, or religion and religion clash. It reminds me of 9/11 where churches were praying for God to save and protect the victims involved. I doubt anyone who was praying thought it ironic that God was the one who wanted it to happen, or atleast the Islamic version of God. You'll never hear a Christian tell a tale of how they oppressed someone else's beliefs, because after all, its the meek and the mild who will inherit the earth. It annoys me that, even though Christianity is the second largest religion next to islam, with some 2.1 billion believers, they still consistently portray themselves as underdogs. On a related note, I was having a discussion at work tonight about religion and how it can't be scientifically backed because, when most religious texts were written there was no concept of science. Books like the Bible aren't written according to logic, and that's why, when you pit a Christian against an Atheist, the atheist will be able to present a hundred logical theories and postulations based on observed natural laws that there is probably no God, and the Christian will give you a hundred stories about how God has struck down thousands of douchebags who didn't believe in him in some manner or another, thus proving his existence. Ultimately its all up to what you want to believe. Religions have existed for thousands of years in order to control the masses. They've all been built on similar themes. Fear the omnipotent, fear death, purge the heretic. I'd rather not have the terms of my life dictated to me, nor would i like to live in fear of the unknown. If you'd really like to see a film that makes you think, check out Religulous by Bill Maher.
lol to be honest, i'm not even Christian, and i would have probably stood up for the sake of argument. i would have loved to take this guy on in an one on one debate. First argument: Dropping a piece of chalk proves jack shit. he's just proving the laws of gravity and physics. it has no purpose, so why the fuck would God stop it from breaking? the only reason for God to stop it from breaking is if God wanted to prove that God exists, and the thing is, God doesn't need to prove that God exists. So the professor's experiment is massively flawed. He should kill himself for that. Second argument: Instead of proving that God exists, it can be easily proven that the idea of God exists, and this idea of God plays an important role in society. Even if God didn't exist, this idea is highly important in the development of man, as it has lead to law development, which in turn lead to justice (justice derives from law, not God, but law derives from the fear of punishment by God) etc etc etc. We can prove that the idea of God exists. Third argument: The professor is the biggest douchebag in the history of the school. He should go die in a fire. This is not a lecture, students don't learn jack shit. lol, I could probably have come up with better arguments than these, but it's 8 o'clock in the morning, my brain hasn't turned on yet. anyways, these arguments go against what I have said in the "Proof that God does not exist" thread. But my point is, someone should always argue for the opposing side, so that way, there's a fair debate, even if you don't believe in that side (that's what lawyers do.
i'm liking what dann said and i do believe its true, dropping a piece of chalk does prove jack shit. the professor just has a rubbish argument to use in the first place. why would god need to stop the chalk from breaking when there are several other pieces of chalk available in the lecture hall and in shops. its hardly a product of value. also, i do think that christianity, the bible provides a lot of rules which help people develop as a better person. such as thou shall not steal, all these things help constitute and make us a better person.
lol the prof should have just dropped a second piece of chalk on the ground. The whole thing is retarded. Assuming the first time the chalk didnt break was because of God, each consequent time he repeated the test he should get the same result, with the chalk not breaking. God's omnipotent right? Thus stopping chalk from breaking 100 times should be no problem. Then again, you might say, "hey, God doesnt need to prove himself 100 times.", but by that same reasoning, why should he prove himself the first time? Shit like this is so cyclical. Its why Christians get trapped within their own arguments so easily. In the past, this is generally where they got fed up and just started burning or imprisoning people who didn't agree with them.
so to conclude, what have we learned kids? the prof has the penis size of a cigarette butt. God should be laughing at it. Just like <<<<=======
haha i'm not in the right to judge.. but in my opinion.. God doesn't want things like this to happen. But He allows this stuff to happen because He gives us the free will to choose whatever we want to do..and He does know what we will decide and do on our own. If God stopped many things ...e.g, saved everything bad that was going to happen.. then..that's not really free will is it =S
God exists. (premise) God is omnipotent and omniscient. (premise — or true by definition of the word "God") God is all-benevolent. (premise — or true by definition) All-benevolent beings are opposed to all evil. (premise — or true by definition) All-benevolent beings who can eliminate evil will do so immediately when they become aware of it. (premise) God is opposed to all evil. (conclusion from 3 and 4) God can eliminate evil completely and immediately. (conclusion from 2) Whatever the end result of suffering is, God can bring it about by ways that do not include suffering. (conclusion from 2) God has no reason not to eliminate evil. (conclusion from 7.1) God has no reason not to act immediately. (conclusion from 5) God will eliminate evil completely and immediately. (conclusion from 6, 7.2 and 7.3) Evil exists, has existed, and probably will always exist. (premise) Items 8 and 9 are contradictory; therefore, one or more of the premises is false: either God does not exist, evil does not exist, God is not simultaneously omnipotent, omniscient and all-benevolent, or all-benevolent beings who can eliminate evil will not necessarily do so immediately when they become aware of it.
Story sounds far fetched. Either it was exaggerated by epic proportions or completely made up. Either way this guy is obviously trying to recruit people into Christianity. I'm all for people talking to me about their religions and why they believe it and so on. But this video has the whole "You're a bitch for not believing in my religion" vibe. =\
