I know that the Condor Trilogy consists of 3 parts..
    1) Legend of the Condor Heroes
    2) Return of the Condor Heroes
    3) Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre

But why is Part 3, Heaven sword & Dragon Sabre, part of this trilogy? The characters are completely different for part 1 & 2.

The storyline in heaven sword is totally different for the Condor Heroes...can someone explain to me?

    Thanks.

A few years ago I was looking for the same answer. From what I have read from the original Qin Yong stories.
The HSDS is a sequel to the Condor heroes, because there are many links to Condor Heroes. The "heavenly sword" and the "dragon sabre" are actually forged from the big heavy sword which Yang Guo used in "Return of the Condor Heroes". (this was later changed to "forged from the big heavy sword from yang guo and the divine sword of Xia Long Nu")

Guo Ying and Huong Yi the ones who raised Yang Guo, put the secret manual 9 Yin zhang king or something like that in the sword and some strategy war tricks manual in the sword and sabre, after " the Song" fell. They hoped their own peope in their later generation could have use this to conquer the country againg for their people. So the rumors about the "dragon sabre" about it's invincibility was spread"

After Guo Ying and Huang Ru died (I think it was the last war), they gave the heavenly sword to the youngest daugter, Gou Xiang (the cute one) and the dragon sabre to their son. Their son also died in war or was nowhere to be found. So the dragon sabre was lost.
The youngest daughter Gou Xiang, which didn't search for power or wealth, established the Wo Mei Sect. The Wo Mei sect (which has only girls in it) which owns the heavenly sword in HSDS (which is passed from generations of Gou Xiang ). Besides the heavenly sword, the secret about those sword and sabre were passed. (which explains why the leader in the wo mei sect knew about the secrets in HSDS. The secrets were passed to Zhou Xi Ru (if you watched it )

I understand the confusions as the LOCH and ROTCH followed on from each other. Since the main storyline of the HSDS happened a few generations after ROTCH, the characters in the last of the Trilogy are different. BUT it makes reference to the first two parts whereby the LOCH and ROTCH becomes the historical backdrop of HSDS. The plot relies heavily on Guo Jing and Huang Rong's plan of reinstating Chinese rule and expulsion of the Mongols.

FOR ALL THOSE WHO WISH TO BE SPOILT, I have written a little commentry below! All the Jin Yong fans out there - you will know all the secrets anyway! ^^ Please feel free to comment...or add anything you wish.

    HSDS INTRODUCTION COMMENTRY:
The storyline of HSDS was set after the fall of the Song Dynasty with the Chinese empire having fallen to foreign Mongolian Rule.

Following the heroic attempts by Guo Jing and his wife Huang Rong defending the pinnacle city of XiangYang as scripted in ROTCH, the City would finally be surpassed. Seeing the iminient fall of the City, Guo and Huang commissioned for two supreme weapons to be forged. The Sabre was forged from Yang Guo's Heavy Iron Sword, and The Sword was made from Yang's & Xiaolongnu's Gentleman's Sword and Lady Sword respectively. These two weapons was later known as The Heavenly Sword and The Dragon Slaying Sabre. The two infallable weapons, together with their secrets, were passed onto Guo Jing's descendants; the Sword to daughter Guo Xiang and the Sabre to son Guo Polu.

Following the death of Polu, The Dragon Slaying Sabre was lost in time, while Guo Xiang became the founding leader of the Emei Sect where The Heavenly Sword was passed down to desending leaders of the Sect.

Generations would later be mesmerised by the legendary myths of the two weapons: '...the paramount of the martial world surcomes to the Dragon Slaying Sabre that commands the world barring all resistance...without The Heavenly intervening, who is to rival?'

It was well known that whoever held the Dragon Slaying Sabre will hold the World at His mercy...only to be rivalled by The Heavenly Sword. However, despite the infamous verses of the Myth...nobody learned the secrets behind the two legendary weapons and how they actually could command the world? What are the secrets?

Seeing the iminient fall of the City of XiangYang, heroes Guo and Huang stored their most prized martial arts manual scripts of "The Nine Yin" and "Eighteen Dragon-subduing Palms" inside the Heavenly Sword, whilst the Dragon Slaying Sabre housed the military treatise named "The Book of Wumu." Belonged to a master of military strategist General Yue Fei of the Song Dynasty, the Book of Wumu documented the most advanced arts of military strategies that shall undoubtly become instrumental to be triumphant at all military battlegrounds and assist its owner to become the ruler of the world. Guo Jing hoped that the Book of Wumu would eventually fall to a righteous Han Chinese military hero, who would rely on the arts of war to expellthe Mongols and reinstate Chinese rule. Hence the name Dragon Slaying Sabre resembled the idealogy of slaying the Mongolian Emperor and ruling over the Han land. The Heavenly Sword held manual scripts of the most powerful martial arts skills over the martial world. In essence whoever possessed the Heavenly Sword shall undoubtedly possess extraordinarily unparalleled martial arts skills who would become unrivalled throughout the martial world. Guo Jing hoped the martial arts manual scripts would find righteous owners to become the witness of the newly crowned Han emperor following the expulsion of the Mongols. Should the new emperor who took the world through the assistance of the "Book of Wumu" becomes a tyrant himself, then the skills of the master martial artist shall defy his ruler and take the life of the tyrant himself - hence the legend has it, "...without The Heavenly intervening who is to rival?' (the Dragon Slaying Sabre).

The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre are infallable weapons and the maunal scripts shall only be unearthed through the clashes of the two weapons. Who will the weapons fall to and how will they help to reshape the history of China? Watchout for HSDS to find out! :) Have Fun!
