Position: Island caretaker. Duties: Lazing around Australia's Great Barrier Reef for six months. Salary: 150,000 Australian dollars, or about $122,000 Cdn.
It sounds too good to be true, but it's for real.
Billing it the "Best Job in the World," Australian tourism officials say they are seeking one lucky person to spend six months relaxing on Hamilton Island, part of the country's Whitsunday Islands, while promoting the destination on a blog.
Within 24 hours, more than 200,000 prospective applicants had clicked onto the website advertising the sweet gig.
The eager reaction - and worldwide media attention - delighted tourism officials, who listed the job as part of a campaign to publicize the charms of northeastern Queensland state.
"The global response in the first 24 hours has outstripped even our expectations," Australia's Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said.
Boyle said the campaign had already reached some 29 million people through television and print media coverage - worth millions of dollars in publicity.
While the advertisement is a stunt, the job is still genuine. Applicants must submit a 60-second video application, and 11 finalists will be flown from their home countries to Hamilton Island in May for the final selection process.
In exchange for the plush salary, free accommodation in an oceanfront villa and airfare from the winner's home country, the employee will be required to stroll the island's white sand beaches, snorkel, maybe take a dip in the pool - and post photos and videos of his or her experiences on a weekly blog.
As of late Tuesday, at least 200,000 people logged onto the website to check out the listing, Boyle said. Only about 200 video applications had been submitted, but officials said they expect thousands more.
Applications are open until Feb. 22. The job begins July 1.

The job description for 'the best job in the world'

Tourism officials in Australia are describing it as "the best job in the world".
They want someone to work on a tropical island off the Queensland coast.
No formal qualifications are needed but candidates must be willing to swim, snorkel, dive and sail.
In return, the successful applicant will receive a salary of A$150,000 ($103,000, £70,000) for six months and get to live rent-free in a three-bedroom villa, complete with pool.

Anthony Hayes, Chief Executive, Tourism Queensland, said: "It doesn't sound too bad does it? We are looking for someone to tell the stories of the Great Barrier Reef and we have come up with what we think is the dream job."
The post is being advertised as "caretaker" on Hamilton Island in Australia's Whitsunday Islands.
The new recruit will work for just 12 hours a month. Duties include feeding some of the hundreds of species of fish and collecting the island's mail.
They will also need to prepare a blog, a photo diary and video updates to attract tourists to the area.
"There are hundreds of islands scattered along the Great Barrier Reef," Mr Hayes told the BBC. "We are looking for someone who can go and explore all the different islands then report back to the world on what they see.
"We need a special person. They are going to be pretty busy having a good time."
Hamilton Island, where the temperature is warm all year round, is the largest inhabited island in the region. It boasts blue skies, crystal water and pure sands.

Thousands of applications
About two million tourists visit the various islands each year, but most stay on the mainland and visit only on day trips.
The job is being advertised around the world. Candidates have until 22 February to submit an online video application.

In May, 10 shortlisted candidates and one wildcard, voted for by visitors to the Tourism Queensland website, will be invited to the islands for a four-day final interview process. The successful candidate will start the new job on 1 July. Mr Hayes says he is expecting thousands of applications: "I'm having to beat my staff off with a stick at the moment because most of them want to apply too."

So who's applying for the job? I read this on Yahoo news a few days ago and it sounds great for a 6-month gig .. the salary and perks are way beyond good for such a short period of time. HOWEVER, I don't think Asian will get picked to be a spoke person for the island unless he's extremely goodlooking and athletic with great credentials. Unfortunately, those Asian with such a caliber will not apply because they can probably earn equally or much more in that 6-month time anyway.
