A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after a 14-year-old was stabbed at a school in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Police were called to Allerton Grange School in the Moortown area of the city just before 9.30am after reports of the stabbing.

The teenage boy - who was stabbed three times in the chest and stomach - was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where his condition is described as stable.

The 13-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident and is in police custody.

Meanwhile, other pupils and parents have spoken out about the bullying and gang culture which they say exists at the school.

A 20-year-old former pupil, who did not want to be named, said: 'My younger brother was bullied. There was a gang culture at the school and a problem with bullying. The teachers found it hard to deal with.'

Another pupil called for the use of metal detectors in schools. She said: 'I think we should have metal detectors in the school. Quite a lot of the boys carry knives and things like knuckle-dusters.'

There were other students who suggested the attacker struck out after being bullied by his victim.

One said: 'It started off as a fight. The boy who did it had been getting bullied and he must have just flipped out. He'd been bullied for a long time.'

But the chairman of governors at the school, Richard Morris, defended the school and said the attack was 'highly unusual'.

He said: 'Nothing like this has happened in the school before and it is all the more shocking because students' behaviour is normally of a high standard.

'This is a highly unusual incident and we can reassure families that Allerton Grange is a safe environment.'

It's like everyone have a weapon with them thesedays.

I dont blame the attacker, he was bullied for a long time, i guess.
Since nobody helped him, he wanted to fix his own problem.

    wtf ...
ugh i'm getting so tired of these people resorting to violence all the time
well good job, you hurt the bully, but you got arrested
not saying i don't feel sorry for him, i guess bullying is really hard to deal with
but then gosh, someone's gotta deal with those damn bullies
what's so fun about bullying people anyways? like go home and sit in your little corner instead of trying to feel better about yourself by trying to make other people feel bad

mmm i think the kids over here just have no respect for each other no more.

    bring back capital punishment haha.

also bring the age down when you can get arrested for crimes. currently i think ist around the 11-12 mark but kids as young as 7-8 go on crime sprees knowing they wont get into trouble because they are too young too be prosecuted.
