Okay, my computer is getting really annoying. I'm not sure if its a virus or not but then my comp just shuts down. Not all the time but like at random times. Sometimes it doesn't even shut down but itself for 1 week. Can anyone help me with this? Is it my power supply problem or virus or something? Oh the light on the front of my comp is still lit. The green light is still on.
Are you sure it's completely shutting down? As in when it goes off, no noise from the tower? How big is the power supply? What happens just before it shuts down, or is it instant? What hardware do you have in there? Cd rom? Dvd Rom? Etc Power source, wall outlet or surge protector?
its from a wall outlet. But then i'm using the 6 outlet splitter. yes it just shuts down instantly. I have a CD, Dvd burner, CD rom, 1 harddrive, 1 external, and theres no noise. The fans in my comp completely turned off. ERm about the power supply. I'm not sure how big is it... How can you check O_O? I'm bad with comps.
does it "shut down" or "restart" when one of my power supplies died (occasionally it just didn't deliver enough power) then it just randomly restarted if u have some hardware monitoring software, u can see the voltages fluctuate so much that once it hits a certain level, it just restarts i doubt it'd be a virus (but who knows...) run an updated virus scan to see if anythings there? there used to be some worm/virus that keeps shutting down my computer, but at least there was a warning...
Its sorta like the power just died. And i can't turn it back on. The light on the front of my comp is still on tho. I have to like unplug the power cord from behind and attach it back in. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't... It takes like 20 tries just to like turn my computer back on.
lol my old computer used to just Restart with a blue screen or just turn off instantly, i heard that sometimes it might be a Virus and that the comp turns itself off to protect it from the virus , or either a Driver isnt working , u could try plugging the plugs off the Drives first and see which one has the error
it could be because something loose inside comp....or maybe fans not moving at a fast enough frequency, since cpu's auto shut down wen reach certain temperature. Or as people has said, not enuf power? try formatting and see if it still does that?
Hm Phil, I'll try that then. Thanks a lot. My lid for my computer is open. So i'm pretty sure its not because of the temperature and its pretty cold on my house Lol. I just reformatted my computer last week. So i don't think that would be a problem as well?
as others have said, just check all possibilities one of my pcs was overheating so that kept restarting suddenly keep in mind, just cos the case is open doesn't mean its "cool" mine were open and it'd still hit 90 degrees =P since u only formatted recently, mayb u could do that again and start fresh and see if u still got the problem. else it's time for a new pc =)
It most likely isn't heat since you said your pc turns off at different lengths of time up to a week so I'd say it's your PSU that's failing. If you have another PC just switch its PSU to urs for a while and see if 1. the problem goes away and 2. the other PC shows the same problem. Or you could borrow a PSU from one of you friends and do it that way.
i still think its overheating, maybe your gfx card. other then that maybe its your screensaver settings (the standby after how many minutes) because you say the green light is still on.
GFX card overheating causes screen flickering. It's very noticable. When the computer goes to standby or hibernate the light switches to a different color.
has this been happening b4 or after ur format and how long has this been happening? any new hardware? and describe exactly what it's like when it shuts off... lights still on, fans are off? Do the drives open? really best thing to do is try a working PSU like someone above said... that should narrow it down...
