The Hong Kong actress was recently accused of faking her wedding On Oct 1, Hong Kong actress Sonija Kwok announced on her microblog that she had married boyfriend and martial arts choreographer Zhu Shaojie in Guam, Japan. Her announcement received congratulatory messages from fans and friends in showbiz alike. However, a member of the public pointed out yesterday that Chinese citizens were not allowed to register for marriage in Guam, raising speculations that the actress might have faked her marriage. Responding to the allegation, Sonija immediately revealed that she and Shaojie had already registered their marriage in April and had kept it a secret for about six months. "This reader is correct. If a Chinese national marries in Guam, their marriage will not be recognised by the Chinese officials. We had already registered [our marriage] in Hong Kong earlier," Sonija explained. Reporters then checked Shaojie's previous microblog updates and discovered that the choreographer had posted an entry on Apr 9, saying that he "will definitely remember this date next year". When asked if she had married on that day, the actress first replied that she married on Apr 10. After much probing, Sonija laughed and said, "Maybe I remembered [the date] wrongly. It doesn't matter, as long as my husband remembers it. Oct 1 was our big day, but we did go and have cake after our registration." It is believed that Sonija wore a simple, but elegant white dress and Shaojie wore a grey shirt on the day of their registration. The actress added that she did not keep her marriage a secret on purpose, but merely wanted a low-profile wedding.
