It's like a scene from a psychedelic dream or some cheese-induced nightmare.

But the bizarre sight of almost 400 grown men, women and children covered head to foot in blue paint wearing white trousers and floppy white hats is actually a serious record-breaking attempt.
The record they were trying to smash was the much-coveted "most Smurfs gathered together at one time."

But it wasn't meant to be.

When they contacted World Guiness Book of Records to register their feat they were told they were too late.

Even though they had managed to gather 395 Smurf-a-likes in one place, this Croatian attempt to smash the record turned out to be a waste of time.

Shoddy research meant they believed they only had to get 291 'Smurfs' in one place to clinch the prized record.

However they managed to overlook one vitally important fact.

A new record had actually been set by students at Warwick University last year where they had managed to round up a grand total of 451 Smurfs.

A downbeat spokesman for the Croatian record attempt said: "We read on the internet that the record was 290 people held by a group of Americans, and decided to beat it, and we had TV, radio and print media report our success."

"We could easily have got more Smurfs, but we thought that over a hundred more than the American record we found on the internet would be enough."

The debacle brings to mind Cornishman Tony Wright who last year believed he had broken the world sleeplessness record by two hours.

He managed to stay awake for 266 hours but awoke to the disappointing news that someone has already beaten the record - and Mr Wright himself - by a full ten hours.

The Smurfs were little blue creatures created in Belgian in the 1920s.

They became famous thanks to the hugely popular cartoon of the same name which delighted children - and adults - throughout the 1980s.

Smurfs? I loved the cartoon!! Anyways, why couldn't they have attempted something more meaningful and difficult to beat. I mean, c'mon. How difficult is it to get a group of people to dress up and paint their faces?
