Does anyone know any good tips for running? Like how much should a woman run, so they won't build big muscles on their legs?

run all u want, u don't build mass from running, at most you'll tone which i find sexxy. and wear comfortable shoes especially if u run alot, hitting concrete for a ton of miles a day is bad for ur legs (shin splints). mine are finally getting better after uhh... 3 yrs? (ran cross country in high school)

But I heard from people that if you run a lot your legs get big. Is there a difference between a woman runner and a men runner?

If you wanna burn calories, then run - your heart rate should be around over 120+ per minute...... 3 minutes running... then power walk 1 minute... then 3 minutes again... then 1 minute power walk.... do that for 20 minutes when you're first starting out.

If you wanna burn the fat that's already stored in your body, power walk!!! for 40 minutes per sesssion, non stop. for 3 times a week. and stretch out your muscles before and after... and if you can do Yoga/Pilates/bodybalance classes once a week, that'll elongate your muscles making you look slimmer too :)

where'd u hear about running = big legs? Is that from observation of friends? Cuz ppl who run competively might work out their legs doing squats and other muscle strengthning (not bulking) workouts for more power and a stronger speed boost mid run. Dont worry :p just run heh, girls don't wana build muslce but i believe they should tone atleast.

Wear comfy sneakers and try to get in atleast 2 miles a day. At a healthy pace it should only take about 13 minutes. Does for me. The more distance you run the more exercise you'll give your legs and that'll build more bulk to ur leg. But that's for long distance runners. Two miles a day will just give your legs a more athletic and toned look.

It's just like weight lifting. If you're lifting 150-200 pounds 5-10 times 3 reps you'll start to get bulky. But it you lift 25-30 pounds using the same reps you'll just tone your muscles because you won't be working your muscles to the point of exhaustion. On the other hand if a person does lift or work out to the point of exhaustion everytime than the body will conpensate by adding more mass to the muscles so that you can effectively lift those weights more easily. And that's when weight lifters have to add more weight so that their body would build even more mass to conpensate again. That's how it works. So keep to a daily routine of 2 miles and when your body gets used to that distance all you'll be doing from then on is toning.

And damn WinterSky, 3 years to heal shin splints? I have it on my left leg and it still aches from time to time and everytime I run it feels like my leg's about to snap from the muscle tension.

^ yea... i tried to go roller skating with friends 1 yr after i gave up running, after 10 minutes i couldn't flex my feet. i pounded alot of concrete back in high school. even though it was called "Cross Country" there wasn't much country involved lol. We actually ran next to and looped around highways. I think we lost a course because people complained to police how dangerous it was for them and us to be crossing like we did.

A girl died that year, truck hit her :(

i've never built muscle from running. They actually say you shouldn't run more than 20 minutes because you start to lose muscle that you can't gain back. So i guess if you don't mind muscle loss, run more. And as proof of this, go look at distance runners vs sprinters.

most of the times, infact all the times, running doesn't build up muscles as much as you think, it instead burns the fat in your legs so it looks like ur gaining muscles. so just run till your heart drops :3

BAM! You'll definitely see lots of smaller and skinnier long distance runners but that just depends on how they train, prepare, and prefer to run. Less muscle equals less water consumption and that's better for the body so having less muscle does makes sense. In this case however, not much difference in leg mass.

take it slowly and at your own pace. i use to hate to run, i couldn't run beyond a half mile before running out of breath. i started working out with a buddy and started jogging. it took me approx 8 months to be able to run 3 miles within 33 minutes without stopping. my tip is to gradually work it up and drink a lot of water before, during, and after running. and remember to stretch (only stretch after your warmup or after running or else you may pull a muscle)!

haha. I heard that you don't develop muscles muscles until the fat in the area burns off because muscles are suppose to be tight rather than mushy like fat.
As for running, I don't really no how long would u have to run to actually get rid of the fat. You can always run a mile (mayb 4 times around the block) and check day after day if the "mushiness" is still there. hahha =]
