My boss just told me that my department has to relocate to IRELAND for 2 years until the company secures another office building here in the state. WTF .. just so wrong ... I can't pack up and leave like I was single. I have a family and all ... Sigh .. I have only until June 1st to decide ... I obviously can't move but I am not sure if I can find a job so quickly. So horrible .. right before my family trip and summer ... sigh...I don't know what happened but the idea of moving is STUPID.

  2. Are department transfers allowed?

Sorry to hear that dude. But, it takes 2 years to secure an office building? Are you sure it's 2 years OR 2 years, possibly forever?
Depending on which field you are in right now, it may be very hard to find a new job in 2 months.

Damn, that's a heck of a bucket of cold water. It's certainly hard enough to have to deal with a situation like that when you're single; with a family, your concerns multiply almost exponentially. Moreover, there are plenty of other considerations when one is talking about international relocation, from visas to education permits (for non resident students, don't know about Ireland but some countries require them). Further, one may not desire one's child to grow up in another country (as opposed to growing up "American" and not just a passport holder). If the move is guaranteed to be temporary, then it may be more useful to keep your family in situ and treat this as a long deployment (like they do in the military). It would be easier on the family to not uproot them from all their familiar bases if the movement is not permanent.

At any rate, I don't envy your decision process, Neg.

There are 32 people in my department and most are still single so they don't care. A few are in talks with relocating to another department but even the office for that is 6 hours away from home. Unfortunately, I don't have that option because there's no openings that would match me even if I want to do so. My current office is the headquarter for this region and the rest are just satellite offices. There have a prob with renewing their lease so they're moving it back to Ireland until another suitable location is found .. with the current econ .. they're not in a rush.

Sigh .. I just have to search for a new job again. My travel is probably on hold for now .. possibly indefinitely if I don't find something soon.

I think you should really think what you want to do. Relocation gives a lot of stress both mentally and physically. Getting used to the new environment, people, friends etc. Also if you have never been to the new place before it is even worse. Also it depends how important the job is for you. Now I must say, many employers to value employees who have relocation availability and tend to get promotion faster.

The same happened to me with my ex company. Although the opportunity to go and live in another country was great, I though the package they offered me was not sufficient.
