Raymond Lam (林峯) is so popular in China that even his look-alike is in hot demand. The impersonator recently attracted media attention when he began making frequent stage appearances in Mainland, shamelessly used Raymond’s name to promote his performances.

Little is known about the look-alike, Xu Haohang (許豪航), other than his resemblance to the TVB artist. On social media Weibo, he lists his current location as Guangzhou and claims to be a graduate of the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. Xu has been making appearances at local shopping malls and night clubs, performing Raymond’s hit songs while hiding behind a pair of sunglasses. Closely imitating Raymond’s hairstyles and outfits from his past concert tours, Xu quickly gained his own loyal following: he has already amassed over 17,000 fans on Weibo to-date.

Taking pride in his work, Xu posted many photos from his various performances online, including close-up shots of his transformation backstage. Scheduled to perform a solo set in Qingyuan city, event promoters have been distributing flyers featuring Xu’s image along with the name “Raymond Lam” in large font. Although the poster does indicate in smaller print that the performance will only be an impersonation, many Raymond fans are calling this a scam and have criticized Xu online over his actions.

Raymond’s manager, Candy, is aware of the situation and is currently looking into possible legal action. “I don’t know if I can stop [Xu] from continuing his act, because Raymond’s name [Lam Fung] is also a stage name. I will discuss with [TVB] and see if we will pursue legal action!” Raymond feels helpless, saying that it will be difficult to press charges in Mainland. He is worried that his fans may fall for the scam, and warns everyone to be extra cautious.

In response to fans’ attack, Xu posted on Weibo on March 15 explaining that he is only doing this out of love for his idol. “I really admire LF [Lam Fung] and his songs. To be able to earn recognition through his music not only gives me a sense of satisfaction, it is also a way for me to pay tribute to LF.”

Yhese type of people make a lot of money off famous artists names. I remember a similar incident with Andy Lau.
