*Stands up* Hey Im BB....New to this section of PA..nice to meet you...*sits back down*...wokaka

Well anyways I went through quite a lot of stuff over the past month and the same question kept popping up
in my mind..and I cant seem to think of an answer to....What Is The Purpose Of Life...?!?!

Do you have a goal that you work towards..?!!? Do you work towards anything..?!?!..do you ever get
the feeling you have nothing to offer..?!?!....ask yourself whut is the point of things..?!?!

  2. I'm going to try not writing an essay.

According to religions that believe in reincarnation, which includes the Old Christianity which did believe in reincarnation, the best analogy of life is a classroom.

I will be emphasizing on Buddhism, as it is what I am most well versed in. Life is merely a time you spend on Earth to learn lessons you need to learn, much like in a classroom. When you reincarnate, you learn a new lesson, and so forth. When you pass away, you should have finished your lesson, and you go back to your real life, which we consider the after life, or the life beyond. Our current living life is merely our time in a classroom.

I could write more, but I'm trying not to lol

Anyways, it seems as though you've just undergone a hard moment. The question you should ask yourself is not "What's the purpose of life" but rather " Can I overcome this challenge, and HOW I am going to over come it". During our time on Earth, we will always find obstacles that seem impossible to overcome. Those are called challenges and they serve just like school tests and exams. These challenges are part of your learning on Earth. If you give up before overcoming these challenges, you will repeat it in your next life, until you have learned that lesson.

When people see challenges, their first instinct is to give up. But the correct way is to find solutions and pass those challenges, and learn from them. They are part of life.

i been thinkin these few weeks too becaus of something that happenened and now im tryin to put faith b4 me and do good deeeds.. ...but then the question i am trying to find out is should ppl be living for tomoro or should ppl be living like its their last day...life is too complicated and y does the good die young

  4. my way of thinking is always living for tomorrow.

if you live like its your last day, you will never get anything done. youd live like having fun and shit, and when the fun ends, the real hell starts.

if you live for tomorrow, you know that you've prepped for the future, so you wont have to live through the hell of not being prepped.

    example:

live your life like its your last day: lets have fun as much as we can and enjoy today.

life your life for tomorrow: work your ass off, get things done now, and then when you've finished your tasks, you can have fun as much as you want without any worries.

I am always living to this thought

To be a useful person, this basically means that you help other persons who need the help.
To achieve something that you can be proud of, since all of us are going to die anyways, we could *wasted* or time here by partying and doing nothing.

Why should we study then... since all of us can be a useful person..to help more people. become a doctor and help more people... there are alot of professions which basicially let you help more people. So if you believe in karma this could be purpose of life.

If by purpose of life you mean the Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything, then the answer would be... 42.

But if you mean something else, then it sumarize to: Breath, Eat, Sleep, having Fun then Die! What you did in that time period would be your purpose of living! But that's how I see it! heh

What the Purpose IN Life and the Purpose OF Life are two different conceptions. Just like what is the purpose IN going to school and the purpose OF going to school. The former describes a destination to be accomplished. The latter can be explain by a more philosophical and/or spiritual reasoning. For the Purpose IN Life, it can be answer with prioritarization. What do you consider most important at the moment of your life? (sounds easy, but sometimes this question is very VERY difficult to answer) However, once you know what you want/need to place in first in your life (ie. career, religion, friends, family, relationship, health, or etc) you have now reached your purpose(s) IN life. Now, for the latter, my reasoning may seem paradoxical at first; but hear me out. For me, the Purpose OF Life is to accomplish these purposes in life (living). Bit by bit, overcoming, succeeding, or failing at these purposes - brings meaning and reason to live a life.

Now, you may notice that the Purpose in Life allows the existences of multiple purposes. However, for the Purpose of Life - there is only one dominant purpose. And that can explain by the temporal ascept of Purpose in Life (PiL), in comparison to the concrete eternal notion of the Purpose of Life(PoL). The PiL can change depending upon the circumstances and situtations currently affecting your life. However, for the PoL, it exists upon the continual gaining of experience through learning and living from these PiLs.

But BB, lets bring it down to earth. I agree with dann when he stated:
If PiL is prioritarization, then you need to spend time thinking about whether this objective that is occupying your #1 spot on your list - Should it be there? Is this what I should be focusing on atm? If it is, you just have to run head-strong and fist-blazing; and most importantly be confident and positive that this obstacle can be conquered. For most individuals, this is difficult step. And the RIGHT religion and guidance can be seeked to help overcome these problems.

    to dann:
can you explain your statement: According to religions that believe in reincarnation, which includes the Old Christianity which did believe in reincarnation, the best analogy of life is a classroom.

To breed and and let the human blood line continue so we can walk on the earth. Just picture if humans stop breeding and suddenly we all age and die.

Who will ask and answer the question " Purpose of life? " < there won't be any one to ask.

  9. i really have been thinking about it, but in the end everything doesnt matter anymore when you found your beloved one, and get kids and stuff, the purpose of life is to enjoy it :)

  10. are you referring to my saying Old Christianity or my analogy of a classroom?

well, i assume the analogy of the classroom is a reference to reincarnation and since you claim "Old Christianity" has the element and theory of reincarnation in it - I was hoping you would explain about:

What is 'Old Christianity'? How is reincarnation embedded into its theology? And how did the analogy of the classroom associate itself with conception of reincarnation in 'Old Christianity'?

  12. Well for my religion assignment last term, I was asked to interview a religious person, so I opted to interview a Priest at my friend's Church. We had a discussion about the similarities and differences between religions, and I asked what he thought of reincarnation.

I told him I read in a few readings that prior to the Crusades, Christianity, along with Islam and Hindu, believed in reincarnation. I discussed with the knowledge that during the Crusades, Popes had banished the concept of reincarnation for several reasons, one of which was the idea that Crusades soldiers were afraid that those the soldier had killed would come back and haunt them. Thus, the ruling Pope, being a political leader as well, has forbid all such concepts. It is also said the Jesus himself also believed in reincarnation. To my surprise, the Priest agreed with me.

The term 'Old Christianity' is something coined by me, for lack of knowing how to refer to the Christianity pre-Crusades. Now the classroom analogy is just an attempt by me to explain why people reincarnate to learn lessons. Each reincarnation to learn a lesson is like taking a new class, a course, hence the classroom. We reincarnate into the world to learn the lessons we were assigned to learn, and take those lessons back to our real life in the afterlife. By classroom, I mean that our lives on Earth is a classroom.

I am not associating classroom to this 'Old Christianity', but to the idea of reincarnation itself.

Now I am fully predicting you are going to argue my ideas of this 'Old Christianity', but understand, it is not my claim, but claims from religious philosophers and experts, and also supported by Christian Fathers and Priests.

I am not going to refer to anything from the Bible, because it will only serve as means of an outraged debate.

But my whole point is not to argue about Christianity, but rather, provide Brown bear an idea as to what life and its challenges are about, in the views of reincarnation beliefs.

Though, I know you want to debate without using the Bible - however, (I'm sorry) when you make statement such as this:
I am going to ask you to back it up some proof and since Jesus Christ's work were only described in the Bible. You will need to rely on the Bible to defend on such a statement.

Thanks for answering 2 out of my 3 questions. However, you still did not answer (IMO) the most important question; how is reincarnation a part of the theology in Christianity? what is its definition in Christianity? how is it applied?

Fine, you do not wish to answer my questions (out of respect for BB's thread) -- I can understand that.
However, I would like to have these misnotions corrected (in case, any other posters comes into this thread and beleves this false assumation that "Christianity has reincarnation embedded into its theological doctrine.")
And this is not a bash on you, dann (my apologies) - but primarly on these "Christian" experts and their misguided theological reasonings.

  14. look. i am not going to emphasize on that theology, because this is NOT a Christianity debating thread.

i am tired of this debate, and all i wanted to do here was to help bb out.

if you want more info, go to your nearest university library.

im sorry but im just tired of going on about an abyss i see no end to.

Look, I'm not hear to pick on you, dann. And my original objective was to also address BB's concern about the large philosophical and practical question of "What is the Purpose of Life?"

However, (harmlessly) I wanted you to explain yourself about the association of reincarnation and Christianity - since you stated so dominantly as a fact in your first post. It was more of curiousity on my part - than an attack on your statement.

Anyways, I guess you won't answer my question (though, in most other thread in the P&R section of PA - many of these threads are thrown into tangential subjects. some even crazier than this, IMO) it's okay.

Purpose of life = experience which counts (IMO) = whatever floats your boat. I mean, there's nothing worst than wasting life away with hating whatever one's doing, life is short, so enjoy it while it last, the experience is unique and unshared by no one else.

Bottom line would be whatever makes you happy (given that it doesn't harm others, and you know, the drill of no killing and whatnot). The end of line is uncertain (as far as anyone knows CONCRETELY), so really, purpose of life is whatever one makes of it: do something worthwhile or whatnot. It could be objectively silly and even crazy, but what one gain is the experience of having done it.
