Officials are warning Lafayette residents to stay clear of the areas surrounding the Grand 16 Theatre on Johnston Street following a shooting there tonight. The scene will not be clear for several hours. Police Chief Jim Craft said three people are dead, including the shooter, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the gunman began firing randomly at people in the theater. Acadian Ambulance reports that nine people were injured, and Craft said injuries range from non life-threatening to critical. He said the shooting was contained to one theater in the building. No one outside that theater was injured. He said the shooter is a 58-year-old white man. The identity of the shooter is not being released at this time. The Grand 14 on Kaliste Saloom Road is closed as a precaution, and there is heightened security at other theaters in town. The Grand in New Iberia is also closed for the rest of the night. Gov. Bobby Jindal arrived at the scene just after 9:30 p.m. A Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office unit and a Lafayette Police Department unit collided at the corner of Johnston Street and University Avenue while responding to the shooting. Capt. John Babin with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office said he is unsure of injuries, though a photo does show the Lafayette Police officer being carried away in a stretcher.
