In 1944, the American military lands on the shores of Saipan. Refusing to commit suicide with his superiors or be forced into camps for prisoners of war, Captain Oba Sakae (Takenouchi Yutaka) leads a group of his men and other similarly minded local residents into the mountains. Even after hearing reports of the Japanese military’s surrender, Oba dismisses the reports as propaganda and continues to launch guerilla attacks against the American soldiers, earning him the nickname “The Fox”. Soon, even the American commander who’s charged with the task of capturing Oba comes to admire his persistent enemy.

BT file attached for MKV file with a caveat, the included sub within the torrent is like a Japanese version of Chinglish, ie. it's worthless. Use the link below (zip file) to get a proper English translation.

Another interesting note, as I went to look for subtitles for this film, the first few "English" subs I got, only gave English text for the spoken English dialogue; the Japanese dialogue (which is presumably what the English speaker needs to see) were left blank (ie without subtitle translations), LOL...

BTW: Real life Japanese Pacific holdouts are stuff of legend. For anyone wanting more info, here's a link to start: LINK Also, this movie paints a pretty heroic picture of these holdouts. Historically however, not all were so daring or even ethical. Some even went so far as killing their own Japanese comrades, prisoners or other civilians in order to eat them when food became scarce. A classic documentary, previously banned in Japan, discusses this tragic event: The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On [1987] In other events, civilians were simply killed to rob them of their food: LINK

One of the things that I've noticed for some time is the state of Asian cinema that always seems to deliver stories of losing sides, but in which the losers are portrayed in heroic (nationalistic) terms. I see this in just about all Chinese, Korean and Japanese films. There is very little output that tells both good AND bad, and almost none (rare exceptions) that ever just deliver bad national history, ie. where "our" boys turn out to be the bad guys, so to speak.

As for Americans speaking Japanese during the war: LINK And the original movie made about Saipan and the Japanese speaking American marine: LINK

Note: Torrent file for the movie, unfortunately, the MKV file contains a Google Translated English subtitle; in other words, it is worthless. Use the attached zip file for a proper English sub instead :
