Fans of Nancy Wu (胡定欣) will be able to see her in Season of Love <戀愛季節> which is currently airing on TVB. With the Best Supporting Actress title under her belt, Nancy is reassured that her star status is rising and she will have more opportunities to take on bigger roles with more screen time. However, Nancy’s rise to success was not easily given to her. She struggled in the industry for 10 years and always questioned herself, “Am I not good enough?” Nancy shares why she doubted herself and how she gained more confidence to take on lead roles.

    Reaching for Leading Lady Status

“For the past 10 years, I’ve had many colleagues who easily rose to female lead status and I always asked myself, ‘Why is it not Nancy Wu?’ I’d ask myself the same question over and over and finally convince myself: I’m not pretty enough. Without the looks, I can only focus on roles that require more acting than standing around and looking pretty.

Nancy felt disheartened and lost in her career direction. However, partnering with Wayne Lai in Rosy Business <巾幗梟雄> inspired her and turned her luck around. Starring opposite a seasoned actor such as Wayne, Nancy’s onscreen time was noticed and widely praising, paving better opportunities ahead. Since last year, Nancy sensed that TVB had gained confidence in her, offering her heavier roles.

“For as long as I’ve known, producers only see me as a supporting actress, so how can audiences accept seeing me as a lead? It’s a difficult crossover but I am used to it. After receiving the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award last year and receiving the acknowledgement, I found a new sense of motivation. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to take on lead roles, so being able to star in Food for the Slaves <食為奴> is like a dream come true.”

    Negative Press

Nancy not only questioned her career, but also her love life. When the media reported of her breakup with Kenneth Ma (馬國明), many automatically sided with Kenneth because he was considered a Diamond Bachelor. Nancy was reported as having Princess Syndrome and possessing a promiscuous past linking her with numerous male costars.

“What did I do wrong?” Nancy asks, “Why did they media have to say such negative things about me being promiscuous? When my previous boyfriend Deep Ng (吳浩康) did something bad, I was painted as the good person. And now that Kenneth has a good image, I am automatically labeled as a bad person. Because Kenneth is a Diamond Bachelor, does that make me second tier? Again, I asked myself, ‘Am I that bad?’”

But things are finally looking up for Nancy. With more opportunities to take on lead roles and happily dating an advertising executive Patt Sham (沈柏淳), Nancy does not need to question herself anymore. “There’s no need to hide any secrets. I feel so much more relaxed and carefree, especially because Patt is not in the entertainment industry. If everything goes right, I think he’s the one.”

There are lots of hard working and talented artists in the industry, but it takes time for them to rise above and be noticed. Success sometimes depends on timing, sometimes depends on luck...the business is very much luck based, whether met with a good script, or the character is just well received by the audience. The ones who'd eventually become successful are those hard working and talented artists who persists and continue their efforts every year after many years, who'd eventually 'hit the spot' with the audience. Nancy Wu have lots of time after entering the entertainment industry from an early age. She still has a long long way to go! Keep up the good work!

she's okay, but her looks are mediocre, cuz her acting always turns up into an evil role.

I would consider her a seasoned actress, having been in the industry for so many years and giving very good performances. Maybe her off-screen persona isn't that high in likability?

Compare her with Eliza Sam ... I think Nancy is a much better actress than Eliza. Eliza CANNOT act ... yes, I did. I cap, bolded and underlined "cannot"

no one disagreeing, because eliza was never an actress. she was a pagent girl, who had trouble w/ chinese. she has made strides in the past year, but the roles she does are easy for her, but yeah, she can't act. do u really see her face playing an evil role? no! that's why she's the holy grail for TVB. but nancy's face could be the bad

I did not watch the series, from the http://ww2.sinaimg.cn/large/66323ee5jw1eb8vf6rzs8j20hs0bx41s.jpg, looks like Eliza was the lead in Coffee Cat Mama and Nancy Wu was not. Was my impression wrong?
