You know, if I had never seen a Chinese kung fu movie, this would have been spectacular. But after all the Ip Mans, Crouching Tigers, and assorted Shaw Brothers since the 60's, I must admit that I'm a bit jaded; aside from the HK PRC politics too. Having said that, the movie stuck to the original Disney roots pretty much as this was a war movie sans gore. Battle scenes where death is implied rather than overly dramatized. Thus, there are no flying body parts nor rivers of blood. Even a battlefield where a massacre took place looks rather lame and carnage free. Yifei Liu's Mulan martial skills are good, but nothing spectacular in terms of the movie magic type of kung fu one expects of Chinese movies. The acting also, is generally of high caliber as all the actors are well known screen veterans to most Chinese audiences. The props and costumes were superb. It's certainly worth a freee download, though I'm not so sure if I would have spent the $29 that Disney expects. I would give this a rating of 4/5 stars. Best line of the movie? "You reek, soldier..."
Appreciate the post, b-lee. I find this movie rather boring; switched back and forth between YT and this movie. Else, I doubt I'll make it through the movie. I enjoyed the animated Mulan 1998 more than this movie, which is rare and weird. Guess it speaks to how zzZZZZZZ this movie was to me.
