Miss HK 2008 Contestants Meet Press

The twelve finalists for this year's Miss Hong Kong Pageant met the press officially for the first time today at the Beverley Hills villa complex in Taipo.

The ladies were introduced to the audience on the stage and then posed for photographs and answered questions from the waiting press. The average age of the finalists appears to have risen this year, with four of them aged 24 already. The majority of the ladies have entered occupations as students, two of the girls are flight attendants and Number 9 Tse Ching Ting (謝靜婷) is a private piano teacher.

Although the competition has only just begun, there has already been a steady stream of gossip surrounding some of the girls, in particular Number 3 Edelweiss Cheung (張舒雅) and Number 4 Ko Hoi Ling (高海寧), whose names have already gained familiarity with the reporters.

Edelweiss is the tallest contestant this year, standing at 5 ft 11 ins and was quizzed by the press about reports of her being a bit of a party animal. She admitted that she did used to smoke, but has given up for six months now after she graduated. As for the clubbing, she said that Lan Kwai Fong is a popular tourist attraction, so many people often frequent the area and this is not unusual. Asked if she felt that there was a vendetta against her on the internet, she said that she is quite a tomboy character, so there are plenty of her wild pictures of her having fun with her friends at the international school, but she does not understand why they have been published onto the internet in this way. When she was asked about the allegations of her complex love life, she refused to answer any questions about her private affairs.

Hoi Ling was asked about reports suggesting that Amanda Strang had commented on her breasts being fake, but she reacted quite firmly saying she would only believe this if she heard it first hand. She said proudly that her great figure was inherited from her mother and she is very pleased with it, but she would like to get her body even fitter. As for being named as an early favourite, she said that this will not raise her expectations from the contest.

Number 11 Ma Choi (馬賽) has been compared to Taiwanese actress Guey Lun-Mei (桂綸鎂) and has earned herself the nickname of "Mini Guey". She said that she was thankful to Jay Chou (周杰倫) for making Guey a star, because this has helped her popularity too. She revealed that she has studied broadcast media at university so she understands what the reporters need to do and felt some solidarity with them. Asked if she is eager to enter showbiz, she replied that she has a natural talent for performance and has taken part in short films in the past, so she hopes that she can take part in better quality films.

Number 8 Yiu Ting Chi (姚婷芝) is a model and some of her previous assignments have been scrutinised by the press, with claims that her figure is always changing. She responded to the comments by saying that she was prepared for gossip when she entered the contest and the pictures were edited by her sponsors, but her figure is natural and she has never had any cosmetic surgery.
