No fewer than seven relationships. But the endings were all the same - they all came to nought. It's a fate that international star Maggie Cheung has to put up with. But she has a pretty good idea why her past love affairs didn't bear fruit. Too clingy, was the former beauty queen's problem.

The Miss Hong Kong 1983 first runner-up has been in show business for over 20 years. Although she has invested all her feelings in each relationship, none of them has worked out, she lamented.

The 43-year-old bared her soul for the first time in an interview with a China magazine.

She said she's like a coquettish little girl who craves to be loved and protected.

'Every time I'm dating, I want to cling to the other party 24 hours a day,' she said.

She is nothing like the mature, independent and sensuous women she has so often played on screen.

Her foul temper was the reason for her break-up with famous Hong Kong film director Derek Yee in the late '80s.

She still thinks of him occasionally after all these years, she added.

She married French director Olivier Assayas in 1998, but even that wasn't quite 'happily ever after'.

The break-up was amicable and they even signed divorce papers while on the set of his award-winning movie, ‘Clean’, in 2001.

The movie won her the best actress award at Cannes in 2004.

To this day, Maggie remains thankful to Assayas.

'Firstly, he tailor-made the movie ‘Clean’ for me. Secondly, he was my husband and it was he who saved my lost soul,' she said, without elaborating.

She has been seeing former Ebel CEO Guillaume Brochard, who is divorced with two teenage daughters, for the past four years. But marriage won't be on the cards till the year 2013, she said last year.

But while Maggie has not much to show for in her love life, she has enjoyed tremendous success in her career.

One of Asia's cinematic icons, she has made some 90 films such as ‘Comrades: Almost a Love Story’, ‘Centre Stage’, ‘In The Mood For Love’, ‘Hero’ and ‘Irma Vep’, and has brought home numerous film awards.

She strides effortlessly between commercial and art-house movies and has held both the Asian and European audiences, captivated with her elegant poise.

Maggie told The Independent that she is moving away from the movies.

She said: 'I don't want it to be the only thing I've done in my life.

'I'd like to paint and compose music, which means everything to me. I have to have music from the moment I wake up.

'My goal is to edit and score films. Maybe I'll discover I'm not talented that way, but I want to try.

'And I want to travel more.'

She has this eternal beauty that a lot of actress don't have right now. I loved most of her movies. I find it weird that someone like her would be so clingy.
