i bought a new eeePC yesterday and im quite pleased with that ~ especially the long battery life. but i noticed that the HDD inside is constantly making noises. if i dont do anything, the hdd the light for accessing the HDD is blinking all the time (which is normal), but while it is blinking, the hdd is making noises.

but right now i dont have any problems with my hdd, i can installs, copy files etc.... but its just the noises...
    so my question:
is that normal? since i cant figure out any problems, i dun think it has broken, but maybe im wrong?

    thanks in advance ~

dunno how normal it is... my macbook rarely makes much HDD noise... the only things i have which do make a fair amount of noise are my external drives.

Knoc has an acer one i think, he might be able to give you some info on whether his netbook makes much noise.

If it is normal you could always just live with it and buy an SSD later down the road

No noises on the Acer Aspire one that i have.
Only sound is from the fans.
Are you sure it is the actual hd that is making the noise. What kind of noise is it? Loud spinning? Clicking?

    hmm... its like "clack... clack"
im sure its the HD... it might be the actuator arm, that makes the noises.
the thing is, i have no error or sth, i can write on my hd without any problems, so i wonder is that is normal?? o.o
or maybe i will get troubles later? :(

That doesn't sound too good to me.
Backup, but since it's new, you probably don't have anything on there.
Try and see if it sounds similar to one of these sounds:
    http://www.thenetworkadministrator.com/crashingharddrive.htm
Generally speaking, you don't want your hard drive making any other sounds than the usual spinning.
Have you hit the EEpc forums to see if this is common?
Last resort, take it back and return for a new one.

run one of those seagate or WD HDD tools through it which tells you if anything might be wrong

maybe its just a noisy HDD?

omg i cant believe... i just solve the problem... i used the programme "hdparm" and set the advance power management of my HDD to max. This will consume more power but i dont have the noises anymore YAAAAYYY ~~ x)))

I've the same eeePC 900 but with the standard SSD. It's very silent and runs very smooth. Dunno bout the HDD version though. But like knoc says, suggest to return it back and get a new one instead.

    -edit-
nvm seems the prob is solved, congrats =)

you should find out if fixing your hard drive in that manner has any long term affects.

  13. you have a HD thats kinda on its way out even though its new. i advise you get them to send you a new HD or return it and get another.

  14. I know someone with the same laptop.. theirs don't make noises you described.. probably got yourself a eeee pc instead.. -lol

in the IT's perspective, i don't think that is considered as fixing it...

i don't think that this is a fix to your "clicking" hard drive...this fix seems like its going to push your hard drive to death faster than slower.

in almost all cases if your hard drive is making clicking noises its a sign that its time to get a new one or replace it because its imminent for failure. try to play the clicking noise from this site and if its similar then i would suggest you follow the advice on the site

yes i agree with the above, it seems to me that isn't fixing it, prob be better to have got a replacement from the shop. the only noises that i hear from my laptop is just the fans. about people who have ssd e-pc u shouldn't hear any noises as ssd do not require a tape to be spun, just uses a chip instead.

depends on the model if it is a old one and likely to have a low capacity such as 5GB or 10GB then No the hd should not make noise i got a eee as well and the low capacity ones have a solid state drive so no noise but if it has a large capacity and is one of the new ones then yes it should have a noise because for large capacities they use normal spinning drive
