This month, Kate Tsui’s (徐子珊) TVB contract officially expired, marking an end to her 10-year relationship with the number one Hong Kong station. With an ambition for jewelry design, the former Miss Hong Kong is now back in school, studying full-time at a jewelry design college. When Kate auditioned for Miss Hong Kong, she had just completed her college career at University of California, Davis. The transition to regular college student to famous celebrity was tough, but going back to being a full-time student with regular hours has both its perks and difficulties. “Because I’m a full-time student now, I have to get out of bed by six in the morning so I won’t be late to class,” shared Kate. “After school, I have an average of four to five assignments to work on everyday. Because I had to promote my movie and also shoot the poster for [Our Goddesses concert], I missed three days of school. I have a lot of catching-up to do.” Future in the Acting Industry After announcing her leave from TVB, many management agencies reached out to Kate for a chance of collaboration. Asking if she wants to pursue a career in film in the future, Kate said, “Although my contract with TVB has ended, we are in a good relationship. I won’t complete all my TVB jobs until next February. Right now I’m busy with school, so I haven’t thought about what my next steps would be. Having good developments in the film industry is not the most important; the most important thing for me is that I get the freedom to choose.” In regards to her decision to not renew her TVB contract, Kate stressed that TVB was “very respectful” of her decision. She believes that they will have an opportunity to collaborate again in the future. “TVB raised me and our relationship is beyond that of employer and employee. If they need me in the future, I will definitely come back. If the company finds it problematic that I didn’t want to renew my contract, they wouldn’t be accepting so many commercials, events, and films for me.” No Interest In Mainland China Many of Kate’s former colleagues went to pursue their career in Mainland China after leaving TVB. However, the actress said she has no interest in developing a Mainland career. “I have thought about it, but I am really not that interested. Money is not the most important thing for me right now. In fact, I am more interested in knowing what direction I will take in the future. I am currently at a lost. Before my debut, I used to be very clear in what I want and I have no regrets, but now that I’m more mature, I’ve become more indecisive.” Admitting that she is most interested in doing movies, Kate will be accepting more acting offers from local film productions. She has a newfound respect for local Hong Kong movies after working on horror movie Knock, Knock Who’s There <有客到>, expressing that she is very impressed with the professionalism exhibited by the crew and director. After winning the 2004 Miss Hong Kong Pageant, Kate made her debut acting appearance in the 2005 supernatural drama The Zone <奇幻潮>. In 2007, Kate won Most Improved Actress at the TVB Anniversary Awards, which was followed by the Best Newcomer award at the Hong Kong Film Awards the following year. With her acting career taking off to a critical success, Kate moved forward with an attempt at the music industry, and won numerous Best Newcomer awards in 2009.
