A Mainland political commentary website recently accused Jet Li‘s (李連杰) charity, One Foundation <壹基金>, of embezzling 300 million RMB in donated funds. The group pointed out that One Foundation received more than 385 million RMB in the aftermath of 2013′s Ya’an earthquake, but had thus far spent only 47 million RMB on relief efforts. One Foundation was established by Jet Li and partner organizations to provide disaster relief and prevention services. After the devastating earthquake that shook Ya’an on April 20, 2013, the charity received immense support and was able to send over 1000 volunteers to assist with search and rescue efforts. The foundation continued to participate in resettlement endeavors, and has recently released a report listing their contributions to date to ensure transparency. One Foundation’s secretary general Yang Peng (杨鹏) responded to the accusation on April 23. Yang explained that in addition to relief supplies, a portion of the fund also goes to operating expenses needed to keep the charity running. He also noted that it will take time to spend the funds since some of the more major projects, such as plans to rebuild five local schools, require long-term planning before execution. Lastly, Yang argued that One Foundation aims to provide quality services, which includes the use of advanced technology. He urged those who are concerned to have patience, and re-iterated that the money is being put into good use. Jet Li also denied the fraud accusations with a Weibo post on April 23. He joked that he really would love to embezzle the 300 million donation, but unfortunately does not have the authority within the organization to sign the money over to his own bank account. He also pointed out that every executive officer of One Foundation already owns companies worth tens of billions, lamenting, “To embezzle this 300 million, how do you split it evenly among them? It is not enough!” Creds: Sina
Very disturbing... Look at the initial respond from the Foundation's Secretary... * portion of the fund went to operating expenses.... this could be the part where it eats up all the donations * aim to provide quality services to include advanced technology... for god sake, SERIOUSLY? these poor peoples require basic needs (Shelter, housing, food, supply cleaning waters). THEY DON'T NEED ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY Li's comments is a slap in the face... What the F is that? EVER HEARD OF THE WORD GREED? THESE ARE ALL CROCS. CAN'T BELIEVE THEY USED DISASTER/TRAGEDY TO THEIR OWN POCKETING.
over the years... i've seen charity functions every year. thousands... millions donated to it. i walk out each day... it's the same thing. to the elites/the riches... the purpose of the foundation is to funnel the money back to them or distribute to their inner circles (operating expenses) the benefits they get is the reduction of income taxes they have to pay to the government... it's the poor/middle classes that are fools giving your hard earned moneys to these high earning people. the world would be better if these high earning people share some with us living through pay cheque to pay cheque... you hear all these news about charitys and the rich in these functions and setting up donation hotlines for these events... the fools that pay into it... what do you get for donating... the money collected... say every dollar... only .10 cent goes towards the cause... theres billions in the charity n the world havent changed... if the rich n famous fund the disaster / tragedy.. u fools will not get suckered in with your hard earn money... theres no need for us poor to fund it...
