I think its true but not 100% certain, to work in Japan you have to have a level 2 in Japanese proficiency test.

Is there a way to test on what level you're on, online or is there an alternative?

you may try to ask Embassy of Japan in your country
normally, theyll hold a test (Japanese Proficiency Test) twice in a year, normally, in June and December.
i took Lv.3 in my country and Lv.1 in Japan.
For Lv.3, you need to get 240 (60%) out of 400 pts to pass the exam but for Lv. 1, it gonna be 280 (70%) pts.
if u wanna get better result, go to kinokuniya (紀伊国屋) or any other large-scaled book stores. there you can find some references.
normally, just around $10 per book but for all four sessions (hearing, reading, chinese characters, grammar), itll cost you more than you can imagine

    good luck!
