Jacky Cheung (張學友) appeared at the Give Me A Hug fundraising event today at the Seibu department store in Kowloon, helping to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He was joined by some young ballet dancers, who shared some hugs with Jacky via some cuddly teddy bears.

Originally, Jacky had agreed to make an appearance at the memorial service for Lydia Sum (沈殿霞), to be held at the Hong Kong Coliseum on 02 March. However, he revealed disappointedly that he will not be able to attend after all, because his 99 year old grandmother had also died this month, so the inauspicious clash with his personal mourning period meant that he will not be able to take part.

Asked how he was feeling about the death of Lydia, Jacky said: "What is lost is lost and you cannot just let it all go at once. I had heard Joyce [Cheng (鄭欣宜)] say that Lydia was finding it difficult towards the end of her treatment and was always in and out of intensive care, but now she has gone to a better place. However, this is a great loss to Hong Kong and the performance industry. Lydia was a unique role model."

Jacky was asked when the last time he saw Lydia was and he replied: "I did not have the chance to go and visit her. The last time I went to see her at home was a long time ago and it was early on in her illness, so she seemed okay. After that, I just asked my manager, Mrs [Florence] Chan (陳淑芬) about Lydia's condition and learned that she just wanted everyone to be happy."

As for whether he had been to visit Lydia's coffin, Jacky sighed: "My own grandmother also passed away on 14 February, so there was little I could do. I cannot even attend Lydia's memorial service. My grandmother was 99 years old, so she was very elderly. She lived in China, but when I was performing in concert on the mainland, my mother came with me to go and see her. My mother and family will make the funeral arrangements, so there is little I can do to help them or with Lydia because of the clash. A lot of things are beyond our control and plans can be made, but changes happen much faster."

Asked if he has been in contact with Joyce, Jacky said that she is currently in Canada, but he has heard from Florence that Joyce is very mature and is coping well.

When reporters also mentioned the death of Jackie Chan (成龍)'s father Fang Dao-Long (房道龍), Jacky said that he knew that Fang had been admitted into intensive care, but was not aware of his passing. He sighed that there have been a lot of departures recently.

Asked to comment on the Hong Kong budget announcement yesterday, Jacky said that because his daughter was suffering from a fever, he could not sleep and was too tired to pay attention to the news, but added that as long as everyone was happy with it, then it was a good thing.

Wow, I didn't know Jackie Chan's father died recently. And it's truly sad that Hong Kong is suffering with the great losses. Best wishes to everyone's family.

Woot, Jacky Cheung is the man.
