    Is seeing really believing?

Someone said something very profound to me. He said "Seeing is believing" is the greatest lie ever conceived.
" Its more like believing is seeing. You cannot see what you do not believe. You are blind without beliefs, you wander the world without a purpose. You will miss opportunities because you do not believe it is possible. Therefore you can't see them even though it is right in front of you. "

    Comments?

  2. according to descartes, what we see can be a lie. the sight that we see are sensory perception. but it is impossible to know if those sensory perceptions are lying or saying the truth. because if we ask what other people see, and they say they see the same thing, your hearing may be lying to you. therefore we will not know if the sensory perception we have are true or not.

berkeley argues that everything in the universe is simply collections of ideas and thoughts. thus, there is no matter, just simply ideas and thoughts. according to his definition, that would mean that what we see is simply the product of our ideas and thoughts. so it is not necessarily true.

those are only two of the few theories by philosophers. so therefore, since there is room for doubt, it is grounless to say seeing is believing.

I wouldn't say "seeing is believing", but "seeing" is a proof of your "believing" because we cherry pick what we actually "see"...

But Descartes has a point, who knows if what we are seeing, or perceiving, is not but an illusion?

Berkeley was on some serious joints when he wrote his literatures... He doesn't inspire me. :p

Clarification before someone try to stab me on that:

Proof is not actual objective proof that what you believing is TRUE. It just proved that you actually believe in something...

Descartes was awesome when you have to write a metaphysics essay.

  8. cant help it. learning all about him in phl105 course.

As physiology has it, perception of color is context dependent. Same could be said about seeing is believing. If you dont believe, even seeing will not make you believe.

  10. ^ but i can find contradictions to that..

say i dont believe that a problem can be solved... when i see it be solved by someone else, then i believe..

^ Yea, but in OP's context, i dont think he was simply referring to a solution of a problem.

if seeing is believing..then i would have cut a lot of people in half after seeing a magician do it and then stick then back together

what we see may not always be real but rather, what we believe is what we consider real even though many of it might be fake.

Take college girls for example. When they look in the mirror they see themselves as fat, not the cute adorable girl that other people see. In reality, they're dying of anorexia.

Is this seeing is believing? or believing is seeing?

  14. ^ i say they just have some complexity in their heads.

    u mean faith?
    not seeing is not believing.
seeing some and not all of a situation
is what I believe is not reliable.
when can one believe what one
sees is some or not all of what
    can be observed?

Darn it, all the good comments have already been said.
All i can say is seeing something with our own eyes can or might make us believe something that we once don't believe into a plausible believing.

For example: UFO, no one believes it existed. But, if I see it with my own eyes, I will believe it.
