use the memory search, dont buy cheap ram dude, if you dont know the name of the manufacturer of your motherboard then open it up and take a look.

the ram you listed is slower i would go with a higher bus speed ram...(see link: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=T3604) if it doesn't work go to www.crucial.com and follow their find me the right ram for my computer drop down menu.

your right about the HDD and they are relatively cheap on newegg but based on the spec i can't tell whether your cd-rom is also using a sata connector or not. Budget pc's sometimes only come with 2 sata connectors limiting what you can add to the pc after the fact. I'd open up the pc and trace how many red cables you have running to the motherboard and then see if there are any extra slots before grabbing the hdd.

I don't see a point of expanding ram on that old computer/processor/motherboard/etc.. it seems pretty slow either way if you expand it or not.

Yea true, but at least I can still use it, so why not upgrade a bit and use it for 1 or 2 more years. I don't want to spend money to buy a new computer. I got the emachines T3604 for free from school graduation. BTW, Do you think it will be able to run say Solidwork, or Matlab after 2gb of RAM installed? From their requirement website, the processor should be Intel Core but I got Intel celeron, I guess it wil work fine.... I need this old computer to last through college without spending much.

Oh yea, from the crucial website I found it. but they show Pc5300 I thought from the spec listed (from emachines website) it is pc4200. What is the different...? Sorry I am a total newbie

  6. hey noob, load up google and hit the forums that focus on this stuff, you've been given a few links and its lead to more questions, it would also be prudent if you study this a little, LEARN about RAM, the speeds, the sizes etc, its what i did when i upgraded my old pc. Show some initiative rather than asking so much questions and using the "im a newbie" card, it gets annoying.

im not with rth on the RAM, 2 gigs will make your pc much faster as i did it myself when i upgraded to 2gigs from my old 512 on my old pc so it will help. if you want to do graphic design on your pc then i advise you buy a half decent graphics card dude and free up the stress on your mobo.

as for the programs, you have to find out for yourself, get the demos, if you cant then don't bother if you don't meet the minimum requirements. If you want to know the difference between Intel Core and Intel celeron then research it and make a decision. getting a program to run is easy, getting it to run 'well' is another matter.

    I expect to be thanked..

i just buy ram at random.

who needs to do research. You need 2 gigs of DDR2 ram, go out and buy 2 gigs of DDR2 ram.

hit up newegg or something and read some reviews

  8. ^ people who like to know stuff, if you know the basics in whatever you wish to delve into you wont need to ask so much questions. if you want to install ram and remain clueless on the matter then your advise is enough.

i highly do not recommend running solidworks on said computer as its very graphics and processor intensive and your specs aren't ideal for it. For matlab its very processor intensive and if you plan to do anything while doing your algorithm calculation forget it, you won't get anywhere.

i'd recommend getting a new computer if you want to run either of those programs

i don't agree with that...even if the pc is older upgrading the ram from 512 to 2GB makes a huge difference even if its a celeron processor...your giving the system more memory to write task to thus speeding up performance...not everybody got deep pockets like you RTH where we can grab a new pc when its gettin old
