Ok, so I decided I want to get a DSLR now.. I'm planning on taking photography next semester and so I wanna figure out what camera I want to convince my parents to buy for me. (I've already succeeded half way hahahaha.. just gotta tell them which one I want) So help me! Canon Rebel XS, Nikon D40, or maybe the D60..
errrr isn't like the first photo class using 35mm cameras? either is fine, u'll probably get more support community wise from the rebel group though =/
same i don't have one either lol. but yea canon tends to be quite gd and so are nikon rele. depends what ur taking pictures mostly on. if it is people, canon tends to have the edge whereas with landscapes then nikon has the edge. but if ur getting the nikon get d60, it is much better than the d40 i hear.
im thinking between the Canon XS and D60. The D40 isn't worth the money imo, its pretty low end compared to the D60, even if you get the D40X with 10 MP. Iv played around with the Canon XSi, XS and D60 so far and id have to say the XSi impresses me the most, both in terms of how it feels and how much tech it has. Buuuut my budget is a bit too low for the XSi, so im leaning towards the XS, mainly cuz it has a liveview LCD which would be kinda nice, and because it has alot of new tech for a fairly reasonable price. If you want to read up on DSLR's http://www.dcresource.com has a ton of solid reviews, id definitely check it out before hand, cuz a DSLR is a pretty big cash purchase. I was planning on buying one before christmas, but now my holiday plans have kinda fallen apart, so i might wait till summer... hopefully by then the pricing will go down a bit more. Id probably also take a close look at lens prices too... if your doing a pro photography class you're probably going to need macro lenses for sure, as well as different filters and stuff, so id see whether nikon or canon are cheaper in terms of that stuff.
Try them both. Actually go out and hold them and see which feels more comfortable in your hands. That's the one that you should consider.
i still prefer nikon and d40 is now kinda officially "discontinued" so if u see any, it'd be cheap cheap =) go d90 =D live view and hd video!! lol
i know she is ridiculously spoiled. i remember her talking about a new digital camera a few months back lol.
lol having a dslr would be sick, but honestly, you can pull off an A+ with a high end point and shoot with manual features worth 300, and save yourself an investment of over a thousand dollars on a dslr + lenses + equipment. some people take better pictures with a point and shoot than novices with a dslr, proves that dslr doesn't make your pic nicer.

LOL!!! naw man... don't be mean... katie, go for a canon point and shoot, make sure it has a manual function that allows you to change aperture, exposure and ISO at the least. If you really need super zoom, get a point and shoot which supports telephoto lens add-on, or just go for a high zoom camera with said features above to begin with...

If you dont want mess with all the funtions a dslr has, then go for a Canon G9 or Canon G10. The Quality is as good as a DSLR and its more userfriendly. If you really want a DSLR I only can recommend you the Canon 40D (dont know if there is a different name in US). Since the 50D was released last month, the prices for the 40d dropped to a very low price. It provides you with all the functions which beginners and semi pro users need. But as the other guys said before, a DSLR DOES NOT make better photos. Actually you will get really bad ones at the beginning and this can carry on for like a year or so until you learn the basics of using a DSLR. And BEFORE you learn the basics, you need to learn which motiv is worth to take a photo of. Depending on how much your parents are willing to spent for your first DSLR they will suffer later on ^^. If they spent the minimum for a DSLR, then they will pay lot of after a couple of month because you wont be satisfied with the basic equipment. If I were you I will buy a G9 or a G10 to learn the basics. DSLR overkills most of their users with a bunch of functions they never use. And buying such a expensive camera and shooting in Automatic mode is stupid UPDATE: Just checked the cameras you wanted to buy, I wouldnt go for any of them because they don´t worth the money. You will reach the edge of these cameras really fast and the photo qualitiy isnt that good.

LOL... kates.... want vs need.... want will make you, or your parents, pay at the very least over a thousand dollars... if not a few... while remaining a noob photographer lol i'm just going to break it down: First entry level DSLR (BODY ONLY) = $600 at the least 35mm lens (basic) = $200 minimum bag/accessories and all that shit (flash, tripod, filters) = $100 for shit ones plus tax and all, $1100. then, you're gonna hate it, because it wont do what you want it to do. Second DSLR (Body only) = $1300 2 lenses (your reg 35mm, and another super zoom lens) = $600 bag/accessories = $200 for good quality shit total for the second package, $2500 plus taxes, and total up both packages, $3600. ORRR you can just get a d40, a shit lens, and just go take point and shoot pictures. $600. if it were me, i'd stick with my baller point and shoot. but hey, if a dlsr makes you cool, then by all means, get the best of the best
