After disappearing from the public eye for over a year, Elva Hsiao (蕭亞軒) was struck by netizens spreading malicious rumours that she was suffering from HIV, she stayed quiet over the claims and maintained her "silence is gold". It later emerged that Elva had a case of acute bronchitis, however the false rumours had already done its damage affecting her image and reputation. She filed a lawsuit against the ones responsible and today the Beijing law firm that she commissioned with her case issued an announcement today stating that Elva's defamation case had won in her favour. The netizens involved was ordered to issue out a public apology and to pay a total of RMB 80,000 (92,000 HKD) in compensation towards Elva. Elva also issued a statement through her studio: "Public figures are only magnified, but online violence and bullying (bullying) in life exist in every corner of every life, work and family. The wind of fabricating, distorting, and ostentation is getting stronger and stronger, even at the cost of hurting others.
