After watching several emotional movies, I noticed that many of these plots includes the main character/sub character risking his/her life (which results in death) to save a loved one. I was wondering whether the act of sacrificing one's own life for another is considered suicide by religious standards.
^IMO, I don't consider it as 'suicide' because the character is NOT willing to sacrifice his/her life out of the blue, but instead, he/she is doing it because he/she has no choice due to the circumstances. Also, by risking his/her life for others, he/she is actually committing a virtuous good deed. However, this is not to be confused in the circumstances where someone commits suicide 'out of love'. Let's say a guy committed suicide because his gf hates him, and he feels that she'll be happy when he's gone... that's an act of suicide, not killing himself to save the girl. If however, the gf is held at knife's throat by a villain commanding the guy to kill himself, and then he did it, I don't think that's suicide. Even if a person risked his life to save others whom are not his loved ones, I would say that the act is an act of bravery and should be honored, and not to be condemned as suicide.
It is considered suicide if the main char is certain that the risk may result in his/her death and took the attempt but failed.
From my standpoint of Christianity, i dont think it would be considered as suicide because you are risking your life so another can be saved.
