Converting to play on ps3

im trying to convert [HDzone]The.Master.Of.Taichi 720p.HDTV.x264.CH10.mkv to a playabe file type
on my ps3, i maybe put the video on a usb or on my media server

i found the list of files that ps3 can read

i was wondering if winavi could convert .mkv files?
and since its the taichi video is encoded in x264, do i need to decode it first?

and which file type do u think will provide highest quality and less space
i may need to encode it back too... since the x264 is already 1gig

ok i just tried to convert it with winavi
it said
"cant decode file. maybe file is brokem or relative decoder is not installed"

i downloaded the codec x264, and even ffddshow
i can playe te file on vlc, but not on windows media player..

i'm not too sure that winavi can. its kind of like a new file type. it depends, i would google it up.

First of all, x264 is the free library version of H.264 and its giving you the best quality to size ratio already. That means you don't need to do any re-encoding but just need to take video from the mkv container and put it into mp4.

or just winavi, that converts most formats and the ps3 should be able to play one of those formats i would think considering that the xbox 360 can play avi divx and xvid files.

well I mean xvid4psp started out for psp.. but it's got lotta profiles made for consoles and ipods..

so you'll get optimal settings for PS3..

I take no credit for any of this, I found most of this info in the doom9 forums. I am only simplifying the tutorial I found and posting it here. I have successfully converted tv shows (.mkv), films (.mkv), and raw hd-dvd files (.evo). First, get the tools you need if you don't already have them: MKVToolnix, MKVextractGUI, H264info ver. 018. I dont know the rules about posting download links so just use google. Of course you need ac3 filter, haali media splitter, and all other necessary codecs. MkvextractGUI needs to be in the same directory as the mkvtools are installed in to run. Once everything is installed and ready...

1. Extract Elementary streams with MKVExtract
-Open MkvextractGUI. Pick your input mkv file using the ... on the input section.
-Check the tracks you want to extract (currently this program does not support subtitles. If i get that
working I will repost how to do that.) Check the video and the audio tracks you want. Select extract
and it will take a bit and extract the video and audio streams.
- You should have 2 files: 1 raw h264 and 1 raw AC3.

2. Fix the video stream to play on the PS3 using H264info.
- Open H264 info.
-Load the elementary video stream you just extracted with mkvextract as the input file.
-Make sure write pps every picture is selected (this fixes the picture and prevents a divide by zero error
with TSremux).
-Change the video avc lvl to 4.1 (type in 4.1 in Level entry field).
-Choose a output file name different than your input.
-Click start and wait until it finishes.

3. Remux Video and Audio into a M2TS file using TSMuxer.
-- Use the add button choose the video stream you just cleaned up with H264info (ie the output one).
you should see HIGH@4.1 on the track info in TSMuxer.
- Use the add button choose the extracted audio streams (ie filename.ac3 or filename.dts)
- Choose M2TS muxing button.
- Change the output file name if you do not like it.
- Click Start Muxing and wait for it to finish.
- You will have 2 files, one .m2ts and one .meta (plus the raw streams from step 1 and 2)
- The .m2ts is the only one you need to keep

4. Split M2TS if necessary
-If you want to split your final .m2ts file...because of the 4 GB file limit on USB hard drives....use
HDBDSplitGUI. I use it for big files(>8 GB) and split the file into 4400 mb chunks and burn each
to a dvd-r.

Here is where I stop. The .m2ts file is now ready to be played in the PS3. There is more info on how to add chapters and burn these files to a dvd-r in BD structure so that the PS3 will pick it up like a Blu Ray disc but I find that unnecessary. I just transfer the .m2ts file to a dvd-r, USB thumbdrive, or external hard drive. I prefer to copy the file to the PS3's internal HDD (as opposed to playing off a dvd-r) to save the laser and improve fast forward and reverse. if you want to stream the file over your network with wmp11 just change the file extension to .mpg this is how i do mine and i get full 5.1 sound and full fstffwrd and rewind
