My dad's 1999 Honda Accord V6 used to be able to get about 23-25 mpg now it only can get 20mpg or less, and when it accelerates or just on stand by, you can smell something.. cant really tell what it is.. but its not smoke.. cause we know what it looks like.. it looks normal... but it has some smell.. theres no engine light on or anything, we don't know whats the problem.. coming out of the exhaust is some bad smell.. never had it before.. it doesn't show white smoke or anything, just smells bad.

disclaimer: im not a professional mechanic. this is all my own experience.

bad smell.. does it smell like something burning? or is it more like gas? is there smoke comming from the back of the car when you step on it? blue? white? grey? is there any spots on your garage floor?

Did your dad change the air filter? Changing the air filter will increase the gas mileage and this may be the reason why your car is not giving as much mpg. Also, make sure to have the tire air pressure checked and to realign the tires. If your vehicle has reached 100,000 miles you need to change the timing belt. You should take the vehicle to a certified mechanic to do a car inspection and give you an estimate on how much it will cost to repair the car.

k & B filter??? that must be it...cause these filter have bigger holes so air can go thru...a filter only cost bout 10 bucks meng,,,

i say ur car is burning oil...if you exhaust smoke is grey then for sure it is...if not better have all the fiulds checked and toped up...yea...the timing belt is important...better check...could also be the engine gasket getting burned...better check...

hemmm, change the engine maybe ...yea,..like the comp prob u had. -lol

not sure >.< never had any problem until this month... car started to kinda lose power.. we were wondering if it was the gas filter problem.. not sure... when we let the gas go then accelerate again, it shakes a bit also..

Better have a full bumper to bumper maintenance. Your cheapest and safest method of all :)

maybe they ran over a skunk...

yea...the gas filter should be changed each year..

air filter every 4 oil change
    oil change every 5km
    brakes checked evey rotation
brakes should be changed about 40k...always change disc and pads together,,,dont let them resurface cus it only cus 20 more maybe...o yea...get high quality pads and low quality disc combo,,,that wat my mechanic friend said
wipers change every winter ,,,or maybe 2nd winter...20 bucks,,,
tires change at about 50-60 k...
timing belt at bout 100k...should do it anyways cus if it fup ,,,then everything else is gonna break...

    etx

^^ Unless if you know how to install a air filter yourself, you should have a mechanic install it for you. Also, ask the mechanic about what parts to buy and buy it yourself and let the mechanic install it for you; it will save you some money.

do the easy thing, just take it to a mechanic and get the problem properly diagnosed.
That will be cheaper than trying to figure out the problem yourself and not fixing it properly, only to have the car completely brake down on you
