The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, informally known as the Oscars, were announced on Thursday, January 10. 3D film Life of Pi, directed and produced by Taiwanese director Ang Lee (李安), was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Life of Pi is an adventure fantasy film about a boy who, after surviving a shipwreck, was stranded in the ocean on a raft with a wild tiger. The book is a live action adaptation of a 2001 novel written by Yann Martel. Life of Pi was a critical and commercial success, earning over $390 million in the worldwide box office. Life of Pi also topped China’s box office, the first Hollywood film to do so since James Cameron’s Avatar in 2009, and the film is currently the second Hollywood movie to gross more in China than in the United States. The film was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, a dramatized biopic about Abraham Lincoln’s battle to end slavery in the United States, formally leads the Oscars race with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Actor.
