Family 'distraught' over 14-year-old daughter's stabbing death

The parents of a murdered teenage girl -- her mom and stepdad both Toronto Police officers -- huddled with family yesterday as homicide detectives charged two other teens with killing her near the family's home.

"They're distraught," homicide Det.-Sgt. Steve Ryan said as he left the family's home in the Parkview Hill area near St. Clair Ave. and O'Connor Dr.

"They've just had a child murdered. Everyone's distraught."

The victim, 14, can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act unless her parents give permission.

Nor can the two accused -- a 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl -- both arrested at a rundown apartment block not far from the murder scene.

The two made a brief court appearance yesterday charged with first-degree murder -- meaning police believe they have evidence the fatal stabbing was planned and deliberate.

The Crown will seek adult sentences for both suspects, a Jarvis St. courtroom heard yesterday afternoon.

In handcuffs and with blank expressions on their faces, the teens made a brief appearance, and their case was put over until today at the 2201 Finch Ave. W. courthouse.

The boy, with short, brown curly hair, and wearing a long-sleeve, button-up checkered shirt, sat in the prisoner's box.

The girl sat quietly next to the prisoner's box, wearing a grey zip-up sweater under a black jacket with her bangs pinned back and long, straight brown hair hanging over her shoulders.

There didn't appear to be any friends or family of the suspects in the courtroom.

Ryan couldn't go into detail about the case but he did say that while the two accused knew the victim, the charged boy was not the victim's boyfriend.

Witnesses helped identify the suspects, he said.

"I wouldn't say there were a lot but there were people who were present and who did the right thing," Ryan said. "We have witnesses who have co-operated."

Police were initially called just after 6 p.m. to the secluded neighbourhood just south of an industrial area around Cranfield Rd.

The 911 caller told police her friend had been stabbed but confusion about the exact location of the victim led to a delay in getting an ambulance there quickly.

An off-duty cop was with the victim when help arrived but it's not known whether or not that officer is related to the girl.

A trail of blood nearly 50 metres long was still visible in the snow and ice yesterday. One end of the trail is only metres from the girl's home.

Ryan said he knew nothing of any delay in getting the victim help and wouldn't comment on her parents' occupation.

'NO INTERVIEWS'

In the house behind him the family also declined to make any comment, as did the occasional visitor who came by to pay their respects.

"No interviews," one woman said as she left quickly.

Two young girls who knew the victim passed by the scene but also refused to say much, except that the senseless killing had angered them.

"Our friend's just been murdered, so yes, we are (upset)," one said.

Across from the home, mourners left a poinsettia and a pot of yellow daisies in the snow with a note reading, "May your young soul rest in peace."

Mary Kouris, whose children attended middle school with the victim, said she was touched and saddened by the inexplicable murder.

"It's not supposed to happen," she said. "She was a very pleasant girl."

At the building where the two suspects were arrested, a man answered the door at the youth's apartment but shut it firmly when asked for comment.

Doug Ward, who lives nearby, said the neighbourhood is very quiet and peaceful and it's hard to believe a girl so young could have died so violently there.

"I kind of wondered, have I seen her walking home?" he said. "It's very disturbing.

"If you didn't know this area existed, you'd never come here. Nothing ever happens."

and thing is, toronto keeps on climbing up the ranks with murders and killings. i wouldnt be surprised if toronto ended up as top city with most killings this year.

im just so pissed off it had to turn this way.

when i get a job im moving back to montreal. and no, not because of the killings, cuz to me, montreal just seems... quieter...
