Nine South Koreans to be charged in actress suicide case South Korean police said on Friday they would charge nine people in the case of a TV actress who committed suicide after suggesting she had been forced to provide sexual favours to advance her career. Police said the nine, who were not detained, would face various charges such as coercion, physical assault or defamation. Three are entertainment agency officials, two are television programme-makers, three are bankers and one is a businessman. A probe into five other suspects has been suspended until the actress' former agent returns from Japan, police said in a statement. Police have issued an arrest warrant for the man identified only as Kim and have formally asked Japan to deport him. Kim is suspected of having forced actress Jang Ja-Yeon to have sex with influential figures in the entertainment and media industry to promote her career, a police spokesman told AFP earlier. The former agent has protested his innocence. Jang, 26, hanged herself at her home in early March, leaving a note reading: 'I am a powerless young actress who can't fix what is so evidently wrong.' Media reports say the note contains names of people who had drinking parties or sex with her but police declined to give details. i just recently watched this drama, and when i fonud out i was pretty enraged. hope they all get charged w/ like sex trafficing or something. freaken waste of such beauty and talent.....
Question: Would any of you care if she was a pork chop and not a hottie? FYI, this has been going on for years in the ROK media industry, you gotta pay to play, either cash or gash. What I hope comes out of this is that the ROK government steps in and creates a watchdog or ombudsman where these demands for payoffs in money or flesh can be reported and prosecuted. Otherwise, it remains a knife at the throat of Korean talent. :tear:
To be sure that she had talent. What she didn't have was the stomach for being so personally used by the industry in such a fashion. That then leaves open the question, how many other Korean notables have been subjected to such an ordeal? It really makes (me at least) one consider Korean media in a whole new light. A really sad state of affairs.
This type of sexual predatory behavior was supposedly rampant in the US years ago, and was called "the casting couch" meaning that if you wanted the part, you had to lay down on the couch (sofa) and get screwed. Even though Korea certainly isn't the US, the same unequal power dynamics are there. And if you were a real but unknown talent, your chances of breaking in to the big time was nearly zero. Unless someone gave you a chance, which you may have to trade flesh for. There certainly isn't any new evidence that this is occurring. But everyone certainly suspects something.
it sucks period.... it is uneasy to imagine some of my fav. actresses were screwed a couple of time ....nasty stuff.
^ umm yea sure big generalizations going on here, almost all singers get recruited under the age of 18 and train for years before being marketed. as for the the casting couch , what can i say it happens in every industry yet we probably have to look at the ones with the least talent.
