The UK economy is in a bad shape. So what to do to patch it up? Make £4billion Aircraft Carriers?!?!-noclue They must be kidding
The first issue I have is that for landing older (non VTOL) aircraft, the removal of the angled deck is a serious drawback. The second issue is the cost savings. You can't go to war on the cheap. The decision to cheapen costs back in the 70's resulted in the HMS Sheffield and its aluminum hull and inadequate radar. And using diesel instead of nuclear fuel? In a war, where the hell do you get diesel? That changes the entire logistics support question. It would be fine for small military air support operations, but involvement in a prolonged theater wide conflict would be a different aspect. As for the economic downturn, creation of a new and better ship would keep shipwrights (and their trickle down) gainfully employed. This was the idea behind the new deal (Roosevelt) after the stock market crash of 1929. However, the US didn't fully recover until the start of world war 2, in which factories geared up and hired millions of Americans to support the war effort. These millions of new paychecks was what pull the US economy back from the brink. History baby, you gotta love it. However, there are reported delays: Britain delays aircraft carrier contract Also of note, is the recent Chinese interest in blue water aircraft carriers as an option towards expanding its global reach. Despite purchase of three previous carriers (the Australian's Melbourne, the former Soviet's Minsk and Kiev), they never actually fielded one, using them for training and design study instead. It would be interesting to see what they have learned when they do actually put forth a design.
just for posting that, you can expect the SAS ninjas to be round your house and we will never hear from you again.....
