Zimbabwe must be the country with the most zillionaires -rolleyes Shows like "Who want to be a Millionaire" will not be a success -rolleyes
Well, considering that international figures like Gordon Brown and Desmond Tutu are asking Mugabe to resign (with Tutu, a known peace advocate, saying that use of force would be appropriate if he doesn't leave), then the situation on the ground must be pretty bad. There is also a rampant cholera epidemic there too. Seriously, an international military force needs to go in purely on humanitarian grounds. Mugabe no longer has a grip on the situation. My feeling is, those that feed from his trough are using his name to keep themselves in power while the rest of the country falls into shambles. While people may find humor in the artificial monetary figures (ooh, look at the funny money, a gazillion trillion mega super zillion dollars?), what that translates to is people dead in the streets and a nation falling apart at the seems; in other words, this really isn't that funny at all.
What people take for granted is that script only has value if people have faith in it. Take your average US dollar bill; what is it really? Just a piece of paper with an assortment of inks printed into a specific pattern, that signifies the promise of a value by a political state. If you have no faith in that state, then what is printed on that piece of paper (an IOU really) becomes moot and immaterial. It could say one dollar, or one billion dollars; whatever. Take a look a the US economic crisis right now, one day the above scenario may be a final republican gift to all Americans
In such cases, people eventually switch back to archaic systems of trade, namely barter for goods or services.
