A teenager has plunged more than 15m to his death as others below urged him to jump and then took photos of his dead body. Shaun Dykes, 17, committed suicide from the top level of a shopping centre carpark in the English regional centre of Derby yesterday after police tried to coax him away from the edge, the Daily Mail has reported. But a group of onlookers below shouted encouragement at him over the three hour ordeal, according to police and witnesses. "How far can you bounce?" one allegedly shouted as others told him to "Jump" and "Get on with it". Police slammed the youths' behaviour as "a shocking reflection on society". "People were at the police cordon shouting for the man to jump," Superintendent Andy Hough, from Derbyshire police was quoted as saying. "We really need the public to work with us, not against us. It was a very disappointing situation." But one witness said while most people were screaming and crying, further disturbing behaviour followed. "There were several groups of youths who ran from behind the cordon and looked like they were taking pictures with their mobile phones," she was quoted as saying. Mr Dykes allegedly suffered from depression and had recently been struggling with a relationship break-up. Ironically, his MySpace page said he wanted to die "quietly" when the time came. His best friend, Lindsey Reid, said he was joker who "smiled all the time and everyone knew him because he was so popular". So that they could then show off to others (friends, family, co-workers, etc) that something extraordinary had happened and had been witnessed by them, thereby giving a macabre validation of substance or an iota of worth to their miserable meaningless lives. In essence, shallow, self absorbed miscreants, with no sense of community, except that they'll walk around feeling special and just can't wait to show everyone that they then come in contact with... It's all about them. These people are disturbing as they are sickening. Frankly, the police should have arrested those who were shouting for the teen to jump under a charge of interference or obstruction of a police official in the performance of their duties. While I'm a free speech advocate, interfering with a hostage crisis, shouting "fire" in a crowded theater, or telling a lie that would knowingly cause death or an accident does not fall into the arena of public freedom of speech, but lies under the heading of intentional assault, riot, or disorderly conduct. At the least, it's quite obvious that they were in fact, interfering with the officers, and may have contributed to the man death.
Those onlookers are messed up. I agree with Ralphrepo. Why were they not charged? Can't believe they would take pictures either. Ineed, the society now a days is disrupted.
Ok the onlookers shouldnt have encouraged them and it was really wrong.. but should they be charged for that? Honestly...I dont think so... i mean... the guy went there with the intention to jump... its not like those ppl forced him to jump or anything... im sure those kids will regret that they've encouraged that boy to jump when they see what they have actually done n even if they dont... it was his own decision?
Wow that is so messed up.. I mean its basically like killing someone. Hope this kids get run over x)..
those officers shoulda at least arrested the kids that were being disruptive and interfering with a offical matter. If those kids were helping the situation that would be a different story but they were making the situation worse... i guess now adays some people take things too seriously and when things go sour they think taking their lives is the solution to the problem...
what the hell is wrong with the onlookers, encouraging someone to take suicide. Okay, that dude were standing @ a roof, with the intention to jump. But he didnt jump right away, so... he could've changed his mind. Even if the onlookers didnt push him, they were a influence in that dude decission to jump. It's a shame they didnt get charged, Making pictures and vids of someone taking suicide......, Do they enjoy that someone is getting hurt/ or even dies??? Maybe it's due to the media, cause bad news sell(get more views) beter then good news... fucked up people...
