i work in a pharmacy, and my pharmacist recommended a rx cream that had antibiotics and alcohol. ive used it for about a week now, and the acne has really cleared up a lot. i think the antibiotics kills bacteria and lessens the redness. ill ask on monday and get back to yah

yes antibiotics does help rid acne, however, i wouldn't advise it unless it's necessary as the infections/bacteria in ur body will start to develop immunity to them...

Only insofar as killing certain kinds of bacterial (mainly propionibacterium acnes) causes of acne; if the acne was simply caused by overactive oil (sebum) production, then no. Also, there is growing evidence that p. acnes can be resistant to tetracycline class antibiotics (tetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline). In such cases one of the mycin class antibiotics, (Erythromycin, Clindamycin, or Azithromycin) can provide better coverage. Ooo... intro to pharm...

As for Tetracycline (TCN), it is a broad spectrum antibiotic that has uses against a wide range of pathogens both in human and veterinary medicine. However you should be careful with it's use if you're still young (generally before all your permanent dentition, aka Adult Teeth, have come out) as it can deposit itself along with your teeth's mineralization process, permanently staining the enamel a dull gray color. This does not harm the physical structure of the teeth per se, but results in cosmetic damage that should be avoided. Like any other foreign substance, you can also be TCN allergic. -what?

Oh, and eat plenty of yogurt as broad spectrum antibiotics can affect the normal bacterial flora of your gut (that normally helps with water reabsorption), giving you diarrhea. :wtf:

My acne doctor prescribed some to some earlier in the year and I took them for 3 months and my face did get better.
Talk to a doctor and see what they say

the antibiotics help to lessen reddening and it also helps to clear up spots from acne scars over time. the antibiotic in the cream i use is enthromycin in case u wanted to kno. i also read a bit about accutane (wayy too bored at work); it should only really be used if u have no response to other acne treatments since it comes with quite a bit of short term and long term side affects.

whoops, havent had much time to check forums...midterms, UGH. im guessing ur taking a topical antibiotic? cream/ointment of some sort? in topical creams and ointments, the str of the antibiotic is usually low enough <10% so that it doesnt have many side affects unless ur taking it long term. it all depends on how long ur taking the drug and its strength, but most antibiotics come with nausea/diarrhea, allergy-like syptoms (itching, rashes, etc) and some other minor side effects. dunno if u still wanted to kno that sry bout the late reply >.>
