So as the title suggests, I want to get a new graphics card, what can you recommend? My current one is a Sis661 on board graphics card with only 32MB frame buffer. Im aiming to get a video card with 512MB So far I have these in mind nVidia GeForce 8800GTS 512MB (high chance of getting) nVidia GeForce 8800GTX ATI Radeon X1950 XTX The problem I face is will these be compatible with my machine. Can the PSU take the power consumption of the video cards (my PSU is 250W) advice anyone?
250w is for normal user. u probably might want to increase it before u do any upgrade or u'll face alot of shutdown due to insufficient power.
The graphics card that you are getting are old (not 8800gts 512)and consumes quite a lot of power. You definitely need a new psu. Where do you live? The 4850 is really good (maybe 170 AR) and for around $100 you can get a 8800gt.
should bump that PSU first b4 u buy a new card... 450w minimum these days... 350w and ur pretty much maxed out and ready to get failures...
sorry to say, but your choices right there totally SUCKS right now HD4850 price range is $150-$200 and beats most graphic cards around that price range or you can go with NVIDIA 9800GTX for $150-$200 also.. those are the best 2 choices out there. from most reviews HD4850 has lower benchmark scores but performs better in most games in FPS that is. both of them are good choice overall and yes i would upgrade the PSU to at least 400w

you cant run 250w on a 8800 gts.. its works fine with 8600 if your consider of getting that all i know is that my two 8800 ultra uses atleast 400W to 500W and that's why I have a 1000 W Thermaltake PSU
go for the 8800gts 512. it has the g92 processor better than the gtx. outperforms the gtx in most applications.
the thing is if your motherboard SUPPORT the PCIE video cards... from my years in computer sells knowledge, that chipset seems to be a Intel (Prescott) Pentium 4 (S478) chip with DDR1 support, where it doesn't support PCIE, you will need an AGP card... if you are not gaming, those video cards will do you no good since no point of spending that much, myself don't game, so i bought the 8400 GS card, cheap enough, approx $40 Canadian dollars. in terms of PSU brands, i used to use a lot of those generic ones but now i got a higher end quad core, i am using Thermaltake (3 yr warranty), you can also use Antec (5 yr warranty) and other brands like Enermax, Raidmax, Coolermaster
there are s754 PCI-E mobos.. so it just really depends on when the pc was bought. if its AGP i would just recommend spending the money on a new system. since the core I7s are out prices for 775 stuff may have dropped a bit. corsair is a brand i would recommend for PSU, they're cheap, reliable, and also made by Seasonic which is another brand for PSU (seasonic are usually $150+ unless prices dropped =\) +1 for the HD 4850 best card for the buck
250 watt is too weak for 8800GTS, beside 8800GTS is old now OcUk dont sell no more i recommend 500 PSU with 9800GTX+
