Following the earthquake that struck Sichuan a week ago, the Chinese government announced three days of mourning for the victims of the disaster. To mark the start of this period, three minutes silence was observed at 2:28 pm Beijing time today.

People across Hong Kong also took this time to pay their respects and over 500 TVB staff members gathered in the main studio car park, led by General Manager Stephen Chan (陳志雲) to share in the silent remembrance of those who lost their lives. HKPAG Honorary President Eric Tsang (曾志偉) also played his part, helping to hand out black armbands to his colleagues.

A light drizzle fell during the ceremony and the sadness of the moment left many of the female artistes, including Susannah Kwan (關菊英) and Yoyo Mung (蒙嘉慧) unable to hold back their tears and even Adam Cheng (鄭少秋) removed his trademark cap as a sign of respect.

Afterwards, Yoyo was still extremely upset as she left and she explained that she had been crying every time she watched the reports of the suffering on the television. She said that she can do nothing other than donate money, but she understands that the greatest pain is that of the survivors who have lost their loved ones.

Susannah recalled seeing a scene where a man was carrying the body of his wife away from the ruins and said that anyone would be sad to see these things. She added that situations like this are unpredictable, but does prove that there is a lot of love in the world.

Adam spoke of how he had rushed over as soon as he had heard about the ceremony, because he knows that everyone has been touched by the event and he expressed his admiration to the rescue teams who are working day and night to search for survivors and provide aid. He hoped that people will continue to give generously because the recovery period will take many years.

Not much can we do now. No money in the world can bring the dead walking. For now, all we can do is to be more altruistic and help as many people as we can. (praying about it wont do us any good) the red cross is actually doing something meaningful, helping and gathering a loft sum of cash to help the devastated place but we still dont know if the chinese communists are going to steal some of its shares. hehe you know the chinese people are suckers; sucking all our bloody moneys.

I can totally understand the devastation of an earthquake since I have lived through one myself .. a 7.3 then. I was lucky as none of my family members was lost in the disaster. Nevertheless, I can sense the pain of these people who have lost everything; their lives, homes, loved ones, and more. Though I am not Chinese and am far, far away, I hope these survivors will have the strength to live on and recover.

I have donated money but I hope that these nonprofit organizations will deliver the aid. I know Red Cross has so many embezzlement cases recently such as a high level staff using the money to buy two homes and for family travels. That's so wrong.

Everyones doing as much as they can to help earthquake victims. Chinas opened up to the rest of the world for help and I respect that they realise this natural diaster is too big for them to handle themselves. Hopefully enough aid will get through to help pple redevelope their lives.
