Is it worth to buy this hdd? Code: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=353 I'm planing to get 1 hdd drive. From my pass experience, i bought custom made hdd (hdd + Unknown casing) and i was able to use for about 4-5months only. The casing went spoiled that it can detect usb drive but not the hdd.
either go with seagate, maxtor, or western digital for external hard drives... mainly.. custom build ones.. do last long.. but really depend if your lucky about the case.
Looks good in terms of appearance and price. But I think you may strike better deals elsewhere which includes good software for your HDD.
The My Books are pretty decent, made by WD so quality is there if your thinking 1TB go firewire over USB, although its a bit more expensive and if your comp has firewire
uh....i dont why your custom external lasted so short, but usually i like to go seagate drives with enclosures. just put HD into a new enclosure. buying the premade ones suck cuz the problem is they use cheaper hd's that fail more and also their casings aren't aluminum usually. if its aluminum great, if its plastic. it'll die earlier just cuz heat isn't as transferable.
i'm not sure if my laptop have usb port for firewire. i'm using dell inspiron 6400. i just check the market at my place, well its actually cheaper than the web(around 140 usd after convert) and the biggest is just 500gb. 1tb is not in my country market yet.
well for 1TB it looks very resonable, but as dim8sum said since it is a lot of data firewire would be the best choice but since you don't have a port i just say get it, ill wait a few more months until USB3.0 comes out since it is scheduled by intel to be released mid 2008 but who knows... might be delayed...
i just do a quick search on usb 3. its still in testing stage at end of mid 2008 but will only appear in 2009 source Code: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070918-intel-announces-demonstrates-usb-3-0.html Should i wait? the hdd is tempting and the usb3 is also tempting. (10x faster than usb 2.0) ^_^ copying file around 30g takes 30-40minutes. if using usb3, takes a few minutes. >_<
i'm still waiting for it to drop and also asking ppl who have to give me comments. hopefully the cooling system inside is good too.
yeah i know but its not a long wait for the convienece of it.... i hate waiting so long with USB2 and my old desktop has USB1 OMG lol so imma wait for it...... =D
hmm not too sure, cos usb is more popular than firewire. it seems to me firewire has kind of faded away.
i dont suggest getting a large external hd like 1tb... most externals do go bad from inefficient cooling... and i don't think u want to lose 1tb worth of data =x 500gb would be my limit on externals
I have 6 of them running since 2 month with no problem. I also got the older 500GB Version (with the green ring) and I can say that the new version is much better. Its bit quieter than the older one and the temperature is resonable. Its not going hot like the old ones. I cann fully recommend this HDD
the my books are awesome external hard drives they are relatively quiet and make very little noise. like people have saying go with firewire over USB as the data bandwidth is bigger than USB. Take a look at the versions there are about 3-4 different versions of the my book's for sale. They all have things slightly different about them. make sure you check them out before you grab it.
is USB 3.0 a software or hardware revision? cause if its hardware like im guessing, if you want usb 3.0 youll need to upgrade either your comp or buy something like a usb 3.0 pci card
well usb 2.0 was a hardware thing i think, so i would assume usb3.0 would be too. but i've never heard of usb 3.0.
You can take alook at this site for some different editions of mybook. http://www.wdmybook.com/en/editions/ eSATA would be the fastest, then Firewire and then USB. I'm not sure what ethernet they are using, if it's CAT5e it would be pretty fast, but probably be limited by other factors. I've seen lots of mybook on sell, and they were cheap enough paying few bucks more compare to hdd + enclosure option. HDDs are as always either a hit or miss, if you hear weird noises on start you should exchange it right away. WD comes with 3yrs warranty and Seagate comes with 5yrs. If i remember correctly, you can send them for repair if they fail prematurely. However, lots of people just simply don't bother with it cause in few yrs, your existing HDD will probably worth less than the cost of shipping and hassles for repairs.
